Description This is for Gods, Goddesses and Mythology Contest by Deadline April 25th.

Yet again as in the majority of contests the mixed media group always gets screwed out of places. Oh well, Yet another LOSER entry for me! I'm So............. ecstatic I can barely contain myself.

It's a mixed media entry using poser 7 for the central model, dolphins, turtles, and sea kraken, and adobe photoshop. The wave brushes and the runic circle brush are from The circle flames, water flame toga, paua shell jewels and the water in the foreground are all created in photoshop using the smudge, dodge, burn, and distort filters.

THE MYTHOLOGY OF THETIS

Thetis is a Nereid and one of the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris and a granddaughter of Tethys the ocean Goddess. She is described as a woman of incredible beauty with blonde hair and eyes the color of the turquoise Aegean sea.In Greek mythology, they often accompany Poseidon and are always friendly and helpful towards sailors fighting perilous storms. They are particularly associated with the Aegean Sea, where they dwelt with their father in the depths within a silvery cave. The most notable of them are Thetis, wife of Peleus and mother of Achilles; Amphitrite, wife of Poseidon; and Galatea, love of the Cyclops Polyphemus.

Thetis and Eurynome cared for Hephaestus on the volcanic isle Lemnos after he was thrown from mount Olympus. He worked there in a cave and created many beautiful treasures for them from the metals and jewels of the earth and sea.

Thetis unleashed the hundred armed monster Briareus, son of Chronos also known as the kraken to keep Zeus from being imprisoned in chains by Hera, Poseidon, and Pallas Athena.

Thetis was courted by both Zeus and Poseidon, but because of their fears about the prophecy by Themis that her son would become greater than his father neither married her. Therefore, in order to ensure a mortal father for her eventual offspring, Zeus and his brother Poseidon made arrangements for her marriage to a man, Peleus, son of Aeacus. However, she refused his marriage proposal.

Peleus was enthralled by her beauty and would do anything to possess Thetis. He asked Chiron what he should do to make Thetis accept his proposal. Chiron, the wise centaur, advised Peleus to find the sea nymph when she was asleep and bind her tightly to keep her from escaping by changing form. She did shift shapes, becoming flame water, a raging lioness, and a serpent, but Peleus held fast. She then consented to marry him. Little did he know that who ever possessed a Nereid's shawl had power over them and the sea.

According to classical mythology, the wedding of Thetis and Peleus was celebrated on Mount Pelion outside the cave of Chiron and attended by the deities

Eris, the goddess of discord, had not been invited, however. In spite, she threw a golden apple into the midst of the goddesses that was to be awarded only "to the fairest." This led to the judgment of Paris and eventually to the Trojan War because when he chose Aphrodite to give the apple to she gave him Helen of Troy as his reward.

Years Passed and Thetis gave birth to a son Achilles the greatest of Greek warriors. To keep Achilles from harm she dipped him in the river Styx to make him become immortal, but the place where she held him by his heal was not touched by the waters and was his one weakness. Achilles was killed by Paris when he struck his heal with an arrow.

This is absolutely beautiful! I have one question, Thetis is Greek and runic script is Norse. Why use script from a foreign culture that the Greeks had no contact with? Yes, I'm a big mythology geek. The piece would have been perfect had the runic script not been in there - now it's only mostly perfect

I was also trying to show how the nerieds were friendly and helpful to sailors fighting perilous storms. The Norsemen seemed to base their whole society on how well they sailed across the sea and raided vairous countries along the way. So, why wouldn't a neried be helpful and friendly towards them.

Well, That's not entierly true. The Greeks had contact with Norse slaves from early Norse excersions into the Mediterranean lands and from Norse invaders who settled in Sicily.

859-862 Norse raid Mediterranean lands, led by Bjorn Ironsides and Hastein they are horribly defeated and many ships are burned and slaves are taken and sold to the wealthy Greek aristocrats and merchants near what will one day become the city of Apulia.

860 Gardar the Swede mounts exploration of Iceland. Rus attack Constantinople. Hastein and Bjorn attack the Loire. Norsemen sack Luna, Italy. King Charles the Bald hires Weland to fight Norsemen on his behalf; he beseiges Norse forces on the Isle of Oissel-- they pay 6,000 pounds of silver as ransom; Weland is finally defeated at the battle of Winchester. Gardar sights Iceland for the first time

1071 Norman Kingdom of Sicily established. Well, I suppose they needed some place to go after the Battle of Hastings. LOL At the time of the arrival of the Norsemen into southern Italy, there was no end in sight for the tensions between the Muslums, the Lombards, and the Greeks. The Norsemen put an end to that quickly by attacking the Lombards and the Muslums in 1038. They didn't attack the Greeks until 1040. By 1071 the Norsemen had already captured Bari the last stronghold of Greek imperial government in the region. The conquest of Sicily began in 1060 and was completed in 1093. This prevented much of King Charlemagne and the German Emperors ability to extend their rule through Italy and over the last outposts of the Greek Empire.

Wow. I was buisy setting up my forums, and website hosted from my old computer. I had to see what was going on, even when I was busy, and what I see gives me no regrets taking a look. If I knew you liked to play with poser, I could have offered you some 3D stuff I made. Maybe later after I get everything working, and test my email program.
