Description FINALLY!

How to Sculpt your Dragon - a brief-ish guide to how I make my dragons... except my wings, because this guy has none! Questions? Please ask! I am happy to help. There simply wasn't enough room on this thing to cover everything. Whew!

This was done using Apoxie Sculpt, wire, foil, and acrylic paint, but would work for any clay-like medium.

I would love to see what anyone makes with this!

*Edit*

Thanks so much for the super response to this! WOW! I have been completely blown away. I can't keep up with thanking everyone individually for the faves any more... THANK YOU ALL!

If you use this tutorial and send me a link to your dragon, I'll add the link to this description

is it possible to use plaster of paris?

QuinapalusTheFool In reply to baka-espada [2014-07-18 16:11:13 +0000 UTC]

I have only used plaster of paris to pour into molds. It would be challenging to sculpt over a wire and foil armature with it, but if you could sculpt a critter out of something else, it would work either to make a mold out of or to make casts from the mold out of.

If you give it a try, I'd love to see!

i was wondering if this could be applied to make other creatures? it may sound like a stupid question, but i don't want to use your tutorial for something else with out your permission. i was thinking to do a Griffen or something.

the only clay I am able to get is biscuit, also known as cold porcelain; do you reccomend it for this kind of sculpture? because I really want to start making dragons but I don't feel secure about the clay :/

QuinapalusTheFool In reply to MyMarshlands [2012-11-29 02:56:03 +0000 UTC]

You can use any clay with this tutorial. Biscuit it a bit harder to use and less durable, but it will show how talented you are when you make awesome dragons with it

I do! lol

I guess in my case, i need to bake my clay figure without the cellophane and apply it after.

Hmmm a harpy sounds like a good idea.

QuinapalusTheFool In reply to robotomize [2012-04-09 02:51:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Oh! Make a harpy! That would be awesome, especially in your style.

I still want to try baking these finny wingy things and see just what happens...

robotomize In reply to QuinapalusTheFool [2012-04-09 19:56:54 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking of getting darker colored cellophane to make wings for them... sorta like bat wings I guess

QuinapalusTheFool In reply to robotomize [2012-04-10 05:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Doooooo Iiiiiiiiit!

I would love to them!

If you were going for a more realistic, fleshy type wing, you could do something similar to the wings on my other dragons? Which I really need to do a separate tutorial on...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

robotomize In reply to QuinapalusTheFool [2012-04-10 14:12:24 +0000 UTC]

lol I went to Michaels yesterday and bought cellophane... they didn't have darker colored ones i.e. brown... so I guess i will have to make the harpy bone white to match the cellophane.

Yes please do a separate tutorial!

I can't remember what you did with the other dragons but i will go have a look

This is amazing, and I love the finished product! This is SO much more helpful than how my art teacher taught lol
I have a question: After the paint dried, did you need to bake the clay or just let the paint air-dry?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

QuinapalusTheFool In reply to TheNewCool [2012-03-28 01:09:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Glad you found it helpful!

Whether you need to bake the clay depends on what clay you are using. I am using a two part epoxy clay here, which air dries to an impact-resistant finish. If you are using an oven baked polymer clay, it will need to be baked before painting. If you are using a clay that needs to be kiln fired, fire it appropriately.

The paints I am using are acrylic and will air dry. There are glazes you may encounter in pottery shops that need to be kiln fired as well.

Art teachers have limited time It would be hard to walk an entire class through a project beginning to end. Besides, then it would be a craft, not art

TheNewCool In reply to QuinapalusTheFool [2012-03-28 19:05:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for all that information about clay. I'm thinking of starting to mold clay, and I didn't know anything about clay types and paint types to use on clay, I was just going to wing it.

I never thought about it that way. I have a new respect for art teachers lol

I would love to see how you use this tutorial! The tutorial was basically a way to share progress shots - something I LOVE to see on the art I appreciate! I actually giggled when I chose to include the basic wire form in the tut. I am a dork.

Nicely done! Out of curiosity, you mention that if your dragon has wings, you often wait to add them until the painting is done. How do you go about attaching the wings at that point?

The dragon is also an intriguing-looking little fellow. I'm going to have to take a better look through your gallery when I get home tonight - really lovely work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

QuinapalusTheFool In reply to MsRedNebula [2012-03-27 14:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Since Apoxie Sculpt is a two-part epoxy clay that air dries, I normally sculpt the body as one piece and the wings - with all of their musculature save for the shoulder - separately. Most of my dragons have elaborate wings that would completely block my ability to sculpt the body in any detail and paint it. The Copperwing is a decent example of a dragon whose body would look pitiful if I sculpted the wings in place ([link] )

To attach the wings, I just sculpt the deltoid, teres and lateral part of the trapezius muscles and use them to hold the body and wings together. The wings have a wire base like the body, and I (try ) to leave enough wire exposed that I can slip into a hole left in the body to keep things sturdy.

Thanks! I appreciate the time you take to check out my work I'd love to see if you make one

That makes sense, thank you! I've just recently started getting back into sculpting, going the polymer clay route. Here is one of the sculptures I did recently - having a lot of fun with these little fellows! I'm liking your technique - I've been trying to figure out a good way to sculpt a whole dragon rather than just pieces in an egg. Your pieces are beautifully detailed!
