Shadows all around you as you surface from the dark

You trudged through a large crowd, dragging your feet. It shouldn’t be this crowded here at night, why were all these people here? You passed a store window and quickly turned away. You had been avoiding anything reflective for the past week or so. It was beginning to frighten you how dark the bags under your eyes had become.

Emerging from the gentle grip of night's unfolding arms

You squeezed your way out of the crowd and into a clearing lit by the light of the stars. Walking up a hill, you sat on the cool grass and looked at the moon. You guessed you could relate to it in a way; a lonely piece of rock only shining with the help of a bigger, more important light, surrounded by stars that glow all on their own.
None of the stars ever noticed you though. What was to notice?

Darkness, darkness everywhere, do you feel all alone?

You allowed a few tears to slip down your cheeks. You regretted it almost immediately, as it was freezing cold and water on your face was not going to help with that.
‘It’s so lonely out here,’ you thought, looking towards the sky again.
‘I wonder if the moon is ever lonely. Are you lonely, moon?’
There was, as always, no answer. A light breeze ruffled your hair, and you pretended it was the moon acknowledging your question.

The subtle grace of gravity, the heavy weight of stone

The world had been especially cruel to you lately, and it felt like you were carrying a million pounds on your back. A sudden chime from your phone caught you off guard. Pulling it out, you saw there was a message from Karkat.

CG: WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?
CG: EVERYONE’S WONDERING, AND THEY SENT ME OUT TO FIND YOU.
[CH]: I’m on a hill by the plaza. Look for...
CG: LOOK FOR WHAT?
[CH]: Look for the moon.
CG: OKAY, I DON’T KNOW WHAT SORT OF SHITTY MOVIE-ESQUE STUFF YOU’RE TRYING TO PULL HERE, BUT I THINK I SEE YOU ANYWAYS.
CG: I’LL BE THERE IN A MINUTE.

You don't see what you possess, a beauty calm and clear

Karkat sighed, looking at your small figure on top of the hill. You had seemed so much sadder lately, and it was beginning to hurt him in a way. He was developing a feeling for you in his blood-pumper, a feeling that was mildly foreign to him. He had labeled it as red, as that was the base of what it felt like. But it felt like something more, something that surpassed all the quadrants.

It floods the sky and blurs the darkness like a chandelier

It was a shame he pretty much had no chance with you. You were so above him, and deserved so much more than a crabby mutant like he was. You lit up his world, and were a bright light of hope to all when things were consumed by darkness. Tears would vanish from his cheeks when you were around, he would stop his cursing and yelling and just be calm, and you never took anything in return.

All the light that you possess is skewed by lakes and seas

Karkat faintly remembered a conversation he had the other day with Feferi.
“Isn’t _____ just t) (e best! S) (e just ) (elped me wit) ( somet) (ing super important and didn’t even ask for anyt) (ing in return!”
“Yeah, I guess she is pretty cool like that.” He muttered, looking at the ground. He felt like he was lying, just passing her off as “pretty cool”. She was amazing, and sadly didn’t see that.

The shattered surface, so imperfect, is all that you believe

You saw yourself as meaningless, and it truly broke the nubby-horned troll's heart to know you thought that. He saw you as beautiful, flawless, he wanted to comfort you but he never could bring himself to do it. Sighing, he began to trudge up the hill.
He made it to the top and sat himself down beside you, keeping a (far too large, he thought) distance of about 5 inches.
“The moon’s bright tonight.” He said, trying to make a conversation. He was right, it was a beautiful full moon, shining with all the shine it could muster. It was almost like it was trying to impress someone.
“It is, isn't it?” You said, almost sadly. Karkat turned to face you.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” He asked. Tears were collecting in your eyes. “Shit, I didn’t mean to hurt you, I just-” He stopped speaking as you flung your arms around him, burying your face into his shoulder.
“It hurts, Karkat! It hurts not being able to feel safe with anyone, to be able to vent when you need to!” He looked surprised, as well as slightly flustered from your sudden contact.
“You...you can always talk to me...” He said quietly. You looked up at him.
“R-really?” You choked out through sobs. He nodded. “Well, I just never feel like I’m good enough, y'know? I try to help people a lot so it looks like I'm not just here to waste space. But sometimes it just gets so hard and I have nowhere to go, because I’m usually the person everyone goes to for help and I just feel so...alone.” You sniffed. He looked at you for a minute, then pulled you into a tight hug, his hand stroking up and down your back softly.

I will bring a mirror, so silver, so exact

“Look at me,” Karkat said, bringing your face away from his chest for a short time. “You can’t see what I can. You just see yourself as worthless, but I see so much more than that. I see someone beautiful, and kind, and caring, and so much better than I could ever wish to be. And I want you to see that too.”

So precise and so pristine, a perfect pane of glass

“I wish I could show you exactly how I and everyone else sees you, as one of the best people they’d ever hope to meet. But I can’t, so i’ll improvise.” He said, turning you gently to face the moon. “Do you see how the moon shines up there up there, leading everyone through the darkness? That’s what you have done for everyone, _____. You’re the moon in the night. See how it’s surrounded by stars? The stars are there to help it see all the meaning it has,”

I will set the mirror up to face the blackened sky

“They’re a smaller part of all the glory the moon is. They help it see how important it is, and how much it means to everyone. Without the moon, the stars barely shine through the darkness. But they surround it, and protect it. So I have to ask you something, _____.” Karkat muttered, leaning his forehead against yours and closing his eyes.
“May I have the honor of being the stars?”

You will see your beauty every moment that you rise

You didn’t speak, just captured his lips in yours and hugged him tight. He pulled you against his body and held on like you were his world, or his moon, more accurately. He pulled away and looked at your face, which was blurring from the tears forming in his eyes. He smiled, knowing you were on your way to being happy again. He had expected you to reject him, but he was glad to know you didn’t.
“I love you, Karkat.” You mumbled quietly, leaning into his chest and looking towards the night sky.
“Flushed for you too, _____.”
