Description After Chile's inpendence war, Argentina lost influence in South America. UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher saw an opportunity to retake the Falklands (known as the Malvinas since Argentina took them over) and improve its image after its liberal reforms left 3 million people unemployed. So on 15 January 1984 a Task Force of 29,700 men set off for the Malvinas Islands using the newly bought island of Ascension as a replenishment point. Upon arrival on the islands, a K.A.S. commando force took over the islands, wiping out the Argentine Marines and gendarmes that were stationed there. Then the Royal Navy blocked the way to the islands and the British government demanded that the Argentine government accept British sovereignty over the islands. The international response was obvious with the complete repudiation of the Reichspackt (of which Argentina was a member) and even some members of the Entente towards the British invasion. Especially from theΒ  American Union States who blamed England for its failed attempt at reunification with New England, Ronald Reagan the president of the A.U.S. denounced the United Kingdom for an "evil empire" and seeing that Argentina was its only ally on the continent (and furthermore that Argentina helped the A.U.S. in the war against the Mexican insurgency) approved the A.U.S.'s intervention in the war. And so the Argentine and American fleets broke the British blockade and landed troops on the islands. After a week of heavy fighting the Argentine American coalition pushed the British forces to a small point on Soledad Island, and with the Argentine and American fleets blocking their escape, the British forces surrendered. In the end the UK was forced to abandon its claims to the islands and pay reparations for the damage caused in the conflict, Margaret Thatcher was forced to resign her post. The next few decades would see the fall of the British Empire as its colonies gained their independence. Β
