Over the decades since the Industrial Revolution, Humanity's industrial pollution had begun to influence the general climate of the Earth. Droughts and heatwaves went from becoming more common to an every year occurrence across the world. The temperature of the ocean had begun to rise causing glaciers to collapse and large-scale melting of arctic ice shelfs. Despite the effort of UNEL nations to mitigate climate change in the 2050 Climate Change Mitigation Act, the heatwaves and droughts still got worse due to the slow release of methane clathrates in the Earth's tundra permafrost and ice capes. This caused severe problems with heat stroke deaths in many countries which were eclipsed by the starvation caused by the massive crop failure from worldwide droughts. By the end of the five decade in the 21st century, the average temperature of the ocean had reached 73.58 F (23.1 C) which was enough to fuel extremely powerful tropical storms on a regular basis.

In 2059 AD, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration detected an unusual tropical storm developing off the coast of western Africa. Thanks to AI and commercial quantum computers, weather prediction was far more accurate and long-lasting than in the early 21st century. NOAA predicted that there was a strong chance this storm would become a Category 4 or 5 and hit the US east coast. The NOAA was right and not only did this storm slowly progress to a high-end Category 5, but it also became the largest and most powerful hurricane ever recorded. Meteorology planes from the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center few into the storm and experienced extreme turbulence due to strong downdrafts and microbursts. The pilots were surprised that this hurricane had such as large eye since large hurricanes have small eyes due to the larger ratio of cloud circulation. The hurricane quickly increased in intensity and became so large that personnel stationed at ISE Orbital in geosynchronous orbit could see it with ease just looking out the windows. The NOAA attempted to neutralize this hurricane's strength by using cloud dispersal agents, but the storm was so large that local cloud dispersion was quickly filled by the rest of the storm.

The fastest hurricane wind speeds were by Hurricane Patricia in 2015 AD and the largest hurricane size was by Typhoon Tip in 1979 AD with a sea-surface pressure of 870 mbar's. This new hurricane, called Hurricane Kronos, had a colossal size larger than that of Typhoon Tip at a peak diameter of 1,500 miles (2,414 km) and a sea-surface pressure of 770 mbar's. As the hurricane reached peak intensity near the US Eastern Seaboard, its winds measured at an infrastructure-shattering 300 mph with 400 mph wind gusts and the US National Weather Service issued a hurricane emergency for all coastal states and the US Government issued a mandatory large-scale evacuation of all coastal states along the Eastern Seaboard. This hurricane was basically a super-sized EF5 tornado. On the Saffir-Simpson Scale, Hurricane Kronos was labeled a high-end Category 5. Category 6 was not possible since Category 5 accounts for any hurricane with a wind speed at or above 157 mph. However, to differentiate between low-end and high-end Category 5 hurricanes, the NOAA used a new term for this behemoth storm: a "supercane". The strongest possible tropical storm, in theory, was a hypercane with 500 mph wind speeds but that required the oceans to heat up to over a 122 F (50 C) from something like an asteroid impact, a runaway greenhouse event, or an undersea volcano. For hurricanes half the power like Hurricane Kronos, supercane became the new term.

As Hurricane Kronos approached Florida, the Bahama Islands and Cuba were almost completely underwater from flash flooding and places in Central America and Northern South America were heavily damaged as the storm's diameter stretched so far that it reached them as well. Before the storm itself impacted the Eastern US, tsunamis came flooding in from the shear winds of the hurricane. By the time the hurricane reached landfall, most of the Eastern Seaboard was evacuated but few remained due to either an inability to leave or stubbornness. New York's Storm Surge Barrier protected most of Manhattan from the storm but the areas around it were flooded and came around and reached downtown New York. Washington DC also had to be evacuated with most of the US's politicians and military officers being relocated to the inner states. This storm was a near doomsday scenario for the US and cost nearly a trillion dollars in damages. For UNEL, it was clear: this was the beginning of the end.
