Description
Here’s something I have put together which shows the evolution of my critter, Theuris (and the yet to be named species) from the very first sketch to the most recent.
Read all of the following if you dare!
The sketches are numbered, numbers go with numbers in explanation…probably obvious but meh (numbers are a bit random, so you may need to search a little…)

1. This was the very first sketch of her, done in biology class. I was doing various designs because I was trying to find one I liked and wanted to work on. This one with the frill-spines popped into my head, I drew her…and realised I had found something to work with!
2. Horrendous sketch, but one of the first so I thought I should include it. I really liked the stiff upper lip (haha) in this one; it’s a bit like a rhinos lip. But this design didn’t look quite right.
3. I drew this and adored it, I loved the beak. However it was short lived, I like drawing the lips because they can peel back to show the fangs. Not with all designs, but with this one I did want softer lips.
4. First body concept, basically the head whacked on a Hurrian body.
5. Skull of sketch 3. Again, short lived.
6. Going back to the lips, now with a definite amount of spines…7.
7. Showing how the spines can unfold to lie flat
8. I loved this design but unfortunately decided it looked a tad too ‘Toothless’ (from how to train your dragon) inspired, so I continued on…
9. Experimenting with flattening spines
10. Full body and again, a bit too Toothless like (dang it)
11. I can’t find the very first sketch showing of the new tail fan, inspired by one of those feathered prehistoric bird-lizards, with the long feathered tail. This is kind of translated into fan form. I quite like it!
12. Tried to un-toothless-afy Theuris, didn’t like it though. She looks a bit generic.
13. Showing how many wing fingers…4
14. Trying to experiment with saddle designs
15. Final saddle design. This is not for Theuris (she wouldn’t submit to this much restriction) but for maybe another of her species. The fans are strapped down, which these critters HATE.
16. I liked this, colour design. Almost the final design. Did this in my studio art folio.
17. This is a page from my school sketch pad that I carry around and draw in every day when bored. I was experimenting with this vampiric-dragon idea I had. I got the nose design down and thought ‘hang on, this design makes sense…now merge it with Theuris design…” and violia!
18. Love this sketch…this is more so the final design, I want to draw more with this sloping shaped skull, but unfortunately a lot of my sketches sport very box shaped faces. But this sketch got me very excited.
19. Angry Theuris with forked tongue….forked tongue got later lost. But this does show her impressive array of teeth.
20. Final design, with ears.
21. Mini sketch of anatomy with no wings.
22. Another angry sketch. Shows the nose bump I’ve been trying to recreate.
23. I lied, bad order. This was up with 19. Again with the cool sloping head shape.
24. Face from front on…surprisingly hard to draw
25. I have no idea what this expression is supposed to be…
26. Most recent angry sketch. Cross this with 22 and that should be a better design. This shows the short teeth better.
27. Simple sleepy side on.
28. I quite like this sketch. This shows the tail fan the best, this is the final tail fan design.
29. The world Theuris lives in is a futuristic earth, so she is eating a little genetically engineered critter and doing a bit of the alert dog look.
30. Theuris unsure, flaring nostrils, wide eyes, teeth slightly showing, down ears and frills.
31. Full sketch of snack from 29.
32. Big jump down to 32. This looks bad cuz I just drew it really quick to try and show the longer proportioned humerous the normally to the radius and ulna. She is fire-breathing, thus the smoke.
33. Rough, but shows the line of the back.
34. Final head design, possibly a little more cone shaped. Perhaps eyes a little bigger too. I don’t mind this sketch.
35. Another badly drawn full body sketch (I have discovered that all of the ones I have are unable to be scanned due to too-big paper issues. But yeah, this is the basic final body design.

So yeah, if you’ve read all of that…good job! I would take my hat off too you…but I’m wearing a beanie, and it’s quite cold. So don’t mind me if I don’t.

Lol yeah she does!
I have a lot of people peering over my shoulder at school sometimes and going "Is that a horse?"
In my head I'm like "Do horses have horns, scales and fangs?" but out loud I'm like "Nah...it's just a...thing"

It takes too long to try and explain. And non-arty non-animal-loving people don't get it. They're all "Yeah..." and go off to text someone.
Yeah. The first sketch was an attempt at the dragon style in the How to Train Your Dragon art book. She grew from there. I had to censor that growth at stages early on when she looked too much like Toothless, but I think she came out nice and original

Lol gotta love the great speggetti monster in the sky
I love, like many other people, the night fury the best. And not just because he's cute and such. I just think his design was much more realistic and thought through than any of the others. What's yours?

Yeah that's kinda odd. And they have six limbed and four limbed dragons, which wouldn't make any sense evolutionarily.
Out of the nadder and the nightmare I'd have to say I like the nadder better...dunno why, just the overall design and behaviour. Though the nightmare setting itself on fire is pretty awesome too!

I really like how much research went into this guys design. As ~etoma said the progression from the first doodle to your final idea is astounding. I just love seeing the thought process behind him.

Thanks When other people were studying philosophy...I was experimenting with nostril functions. I think it's funny how much the design changed

29. is adorable, i'd love to see something like it digitally.

the progression is really astounding. the vrolera have really morphed like this too, it's fun to look at.

I might get around to it, depending on how much school wants to take over my life
Do you have a progression sheet of your Vrolera? I’d be interested to see it

same story here. school can really eat up all of my time.

i don't but i could make one once i'm satisfied with them. i'm still debating over some of their key features.

Teachers seem to think students have infinite time outside of school to do their assignments.

Cool, it'll be interesting to see where they end up
