I don't know for sure how it started, but I think it was a combination of her design and the basis of the new region.Β As for why I don't like them, well, part of it is that I'm not really a meme fan, but another part of it is that they feel stereotypical to me, plus we don't even know her canon personality yet (assuming she ends up being Ash's traveling companion in the Gen 8 anime, which isn't guaranteed because Ash doesn't always travel with one of the playable characters even after the option to choose whether to play as a boy or a girl was introduced (in Gen 5 he traveled with Cilan and Iris, both of whom were Gym Leaders in the games (though you only battled Iris as a Gym Leader in Pokemon White), and the latter was even the Champion in Black/White 2), and in the Sun and Moon anime his "companions" are all Trial Leaders, except for Lillie).
