This is something that no one would think of, but it is soooo efective!!!
Your right, the hair does make a difference, but the ears and eyes give it the weird creature look.
I also really like the way you have made the colours run at the joins in the metal, gives is a slightly aged look, and removes some of the 'computer perfection' look that people often try to make (or are to lazy to get rid of!).
