Description This was another commission Request to feature Red Shetland in History.

I chose the Spanish American war of 1898. And especially the Rough Riders. Outside of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, very few people today even are aware of the Events that took place in February of 1898 with the destruction of the USS Maine in Havana harbor. Immediately it was blamed on the Spanish setting off a mine sinking the ship. It was pretty much the 9-11 of its time. ( A huge coffer dam was raised around the Maine in 1912, the ship thoroughly investigated, the ship was later towed out to the straights of Florida and ceremonially sunk. It was much later, around 1997 it was determined that it was likely a coal dust fire in a coal bin next to the forward main powder room that caused the explosion.)

But the Span-Am war would be a huge awakening to the European nations. The US Navy utterly destroyed the Spanish Navy at Cuba and Manila harbor and the Spanish had the third largest navy in the world at the time. The US would gain the Territories of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam and the Philippines ( President McKinley would promise the independence of the Philippines in 50 years, which did happen.) The war also finally buried the hatred of the US Civil war between the states.

I featured Red as one of Roosevelts 1st Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders. Armed with a 1896 Krag Carbine in .30-40, a Mills belt with 50 rounds of ammunition, Bolo knife. The Rough Riders earned wide respect and admiration. Plus was the only true non-segregated unit in the war. Roosevelt didn't care what your race, religion, status was, all he cared about was were they willing to fight. And fight they did. Roosevelt would as president unsegregated the military, Only to have President Wilson resegregate the military in time for WW1, that wouldn't end til 1947.

Ahh the Spainsh American war when a ex colony becomes a empire and took over Puerto Rico. Now the U.S has a territory which they ignore and abuse to this day. Still nice drawing rabbi-tom

Puerto Rico was offered Statehood or independence as recently as 2017. And the Puerto Ricans voted 61% to remain a commonwealth, 33% statehood, but only 5.5% Independence.

Plus Puerto Rico's Governor has proven to be corrupt as all hell when they recently found all those emergency supplies warehoused since BEFORE Hurricane Maria.

So True Rabbi-Tom i apologized if i if i was being rude i must stop seeing the news in the morning it gets me in a bad mood. Things have not being easy in Puerto Rico. The hurricane, The chatgate scandal, earthquake now the virus. It is taking a toll on my people, when virus is over i hope that there will be a change for the better. At lest we got rid of one corrupt rat now we must identified the other rats and go for the rat nest.

And again i apologized if i was being rude or acting stupidly.

Funny thing in Puerto Rico we get so much army surplus due to all of the wars we were involved in a lot of weird and cool stuff appears from time to time due to the large veteran community. So there is a lot of weaponry the only thing that is missing is a guillotine.

Big Stick Diplomacy at its finest. They wanted the Spanish out of the Caribbean and that's what they got. Ancient history now; but I still hear people wussing about it.

The Krag Carbine is a rare instrument these days; more than half the ones I see at gun shows are fake. For some reason, the dealers don't like you to point out the Plastic Wood in the end of the stock.

Better yet the fake 1898 carbines made from regular rifles since they only made 5000 of them and most went to the Philippines for the insurrection of 1899-1902 and stayed there.

Lt Col. Bill Brophy , the leading expert on the Krag Jorgenson, kept a log book with him, saw mine at a gun show in 1990, wrote down the serial number, saying "You have #18!" I asked "18th one made?" He said, "No, 18th one known to exist!" Told me the serial number range of the carbines for the 1898 and how the true range was 118K-122K. Most fakes are in the high 475Ks. Plus how on the carbine rear sights are marked with a 'c' and further back than the rifle sights.

I've knocked down numerous fake carbines at gun shows by unscrupulous dealers trying to pass them off as original. Much like the WW2 German Partisan assault badges, only 220 were issued, and one of THE most sought after decorations. Yet always seem to have 2-3 at every gun show I've been to. Thanks to exceptional Russian counterfeits. Its gotten to the point where the copies are so good, its difficult to spot the fakes. Now unless you are buying directly from a WW2 vet, most are considered fakes.
