Designed to race in the Junior World Rally Championship the Punto Abarth Rally is derived from the Punto HGT (130 bhp) and has been adjusted to meet FIA Super 1600 regulations. The size has therefore changed: the Fiat Punto Rally is 122 mm broader and 40 mm lower than the HGT (its length has remained the same). The wings, bumpers and upper spoiler are new and made out of composite material.
Engine displacement has been reduced to 1579 cc (the Punto HGT is powered by a 1.8 16v unit). This has been achieved by altering the stroke by fitting a new, lighter crankshaft. New racing pistons and connecting rods have also been fitted. The engine flywheel is lighter, while the exhaust manifold is new and the intake manifold is single.
The transmission consists of a single-plate metal-ceramic clutch, a 6-speed gearbox (plus reverse) with frontal engagement and sequential control, and a self-locking, lamellar differential.
The suspension, also new, has been developed to accommodate the broader body and come in two versions: one for asphalt and the other for unsurfaced roads. The front end is fitted with a light alloy pillar combined with dual-setting oleopneumatic shock-absorbers. The rear end comes with an advanced version of the standard torsion beam with springs coaxial with the shock absorbers. All the joints are Unibals. The asphalt and unsurfaced road versions also differ in terms of the type of spring and shock absorber used and their different ground clearances. The light alloy wheels are 7x17 (for asphalt) and 6x16 (for unsurfaced roads). The braking system comes with a dual pump. The Brembo calipers and discs fitted at the front come with different cross sections according to road surface type. Standard discs, again with Brembo calipers, are fitted at the rear. The system also comes with a front and rear brakeforce distributor on the pedal, a driver-controlled regulator and a hydraulic handbrake.
