Description Finally, finally finished with this piece! It took quite a bit of work, what with all the symmetry in the Quetzlecoatl's wings and the detail on the Mayan-themed walls. I was also going to have a blue sky in the background, but I couldn't get the color gradation to do what I wanted it to do, so I opted for a purpley-coppery textured painting instead.

Lots of mediums used on this one - watercolor for the underpainting, colored pencil, acrylic, markers, paint pens, and acrylic varnish. The mat (not visible here) will also have wooden beads and shiny bits.

There's no deep meaning to this one - I saw this adorable hairy bush viper and knew instantly how I wanted to use it. Yeah, POP, just like that. Combined with elements from an old, old sketch for another Serpent Star, I think this is one of my better efforts.

Oh, you have a point there. I'm not familiar with Mastadon, but their cover artist sure has his color sense in the right place!

It's just a matter of persistence and practice, and taking some college drawing classes helps a bit, too.

You know, I think that's an effect of the scanner, and I decided not to punch it up to blinding levels this time. I used a lot of gel medium on the original as both preservative and texturing agent, and it gave the piece a whole different look from my normal colored pencil stuff.

Very fine, Rachel. I see it as a bright mosaic on the floor, with the dragon leering up from the depths.

Thank you!

Yeah, the color scheme does make it look much more like we're viewing from above. Originally, the big dark bit in the middle was going to be open sky, and the snake was flying at you from the clouds. Couldn't get the blues to cooperate with me, though, so I opted for purple-and-copper textures.

Ooooooh the colors are so pretty!
the serpent s amazing but what impresses me the most is the bg. the way you add texture looks so good and almost a fantasy real!

That's just what I was going for with all the texturing. I left it quite a bit rougher than I usually do (as my original idea was to make all of the colors smooth like they are on the snake), but I needed that textural contrast to hold the thing together. That, and I got kind of lazy toward the end and just started slapping color in there...

Fantastic background textures! And what can I say? Only from you would a statement such as, "I saw this adorable hairy bush viper" seem natural and appropriate.

Very nice work!

*snicker* Thanks very much. And the bush vipers ARE adorable - they're nocturnal, so they have those big puppy eyes.

LOL - Thank you... I think!

Mesoamericana absolutely fascinates me. It's very distinct from western- and far-eastern-influenced art and architecture.
