Description I was thinking "gas giants" when I conceived of this series of dragons, then I thought to myself, "Well, I can't forget the biggest gas giant of all, and the explody, firey one at that!" So I did a sun dragon. He dwells in those strange, shadowy places on the surface of the sun, furling and twirling among his brighter, incandescent brethren.

I constructed this piece a little bit differently from the others in this series. I first drew the dragon, then I did an all-over red/orange/yellow watercolor wash with salt. I then painted the black bars with India ink. Then I colored in the dragon with colored pencil, which took about 20 hours of work, spread out over a couple of weeks. I went back in and punched up the color in the bar in the background even more with some cadmium red acrylic, and I used a paper towel and brown acrylics to break up the black bars on top and bottom.

That is completely awesome. A sun dragon is a fantasic idea, and it's pulled off really beautifully here.

The mediums and processes used are all very interesting. It's a very vibrant piece, majestic even, and the background textures are very cool.
