Description Tremorworks: Demongate High: Ofan (version 2)

This is one of those really strange angelic critters that we don't hear much about. There's some references to it in the Book of Ezekiel - a great wheel of lightning and fire and eyed wings. Don't know about their personalities, and that's too bad!

Inked with Zigs.

This looks like a nicer and cooler version of the critter on the cover of one of my fav books [link]
I want to colour it but I'm so busy right now. . .Soon though I'll find time for it!

Yeah, I remember that story. It's one that I like a whole lot, too, because it was among the first science-fiction/fantasy story series I read. What puzzled me in later years was that there are a couple of different descriptions I've run across for cherubim. One is the ball of wings and eyes that L'Engle described (and I think Ezekiel does, too), and then there's the Hebrew cherubim which has four wings with eyes all over, four heads (lion, bull, eagle, man), and calf's feet. According to the text that Phoenixsamurai used for his game book, the one you see here is the Ofan, which he set as a distinctly different entity from the four-faced Cherubim. Confusing from a historical perspective, but lots of fun to draw.

I like it a lot too, I've had it for a long time.

Whether you choose to redo it or not, I think it looks great. Sorry for taking so long to see it!
And FYI, since you asked about personalities, here's what I've got for them so far:

The ofanim, also called the galgallim, are β€œwheeled” angels that serve as the chariot of The Allfather, as well as β€œtaxis” within the Heavenly Realms. They seldom speak, but are known for their cheerfulness and playful nature. However, they are never mischievous.

Heh, very cool. That works for me.

I still have Metatron left to do for the current set, then I shall await further orders.

When I was about twelve I had a freaky dream about these things comin' to get me. Someone called them the 'NotBirds.' Creeped me out to see them drawn here, they look so similar to the ones I drew.

Heh. Perhaps it was not so much a dream as a Visitation... They're supposed to be a variety of angel. ...Though NotBirds seems a very apt name, and it conjurs up all sorts of other images.

It might very well have been a visitation, either way it was unnerving. ;D

Thanks very much!

I may redo this one again - I still am not quite pleased with the effect and the balance. I probably need to reformat it in a perfect square instead.

That thing is BIZARRE. But you pulled the design off wonderfully, the evenness and symmetry is really great.

Though it kind of makes you wonder if the people who wrote about these mythical critters were dabbling with funny mushrooms or something...

rachaelm5 In reply to jiangzu [2008-10-25 16:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! Hebrew mythology is full of all KINDS of great critters. And why would they have to have been tripping to come up with stuff like this - not that they weren't, necessarily... I dream of strange things like, and I can see such imagery being prompted by powerful thunderstorms and other natural phenomenae like that. And of course there IS the whole meditation-fasting-sniffing-incense thing to consider.

It's not totally necessary to be high/tripping to come up with wild things. It just helps alot XD (and I suppose fasting/meditation/sleep deprivation can have the same effect also)

rachaelm5 In reply to Natzamin [2008-10-25 16:34:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Yes it is. I really ought to try a more three-dimensional angle for this guy to show the way that the wings layer a bit better.

Aesceus [2008-10-22 19:56:03 +0000 UTC]

The wings all look like little birdy heads on profile. c:

It seems to be an interesting concept, will you colour it : D ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to Aesceus [2008-10-25 16:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you're right! *chirp*

I might color it, but it's not high on the priority list right now. I think I want to redo the drawing yet again to get the balance and symmetry a bit better.

Yes, this was one of the more challenging inking projects. I was worried about it going too dark, and I *still* am not particularly pleased with the rays-of-light effect, so I may yet do this one again.

It's a Hebrew beastie related to the cherubim. It's weird - if you've ever read A Wind in the Door by Madeline L'Engle, you're probably thinking of the same cherubim I am - good ol' Progonoskes. Now that I've done a little bit of research, it turns out that Progo was more of an Ofan than a Cherubim. The Cherubim are slightly more humanoid - while still being really bizzare.
