Description My love recently gave me a challenger to draw a bellydancer, only one who is large and voluptuous, like us. She wanted me to put much detail into it, and gave me other suggestions along the way. This is the result. I think its one of my best works ever, and it will be becoming a wallpaper soon and perhaps the new layout for my website.

It may also inspire a series of sacred large women, as drawing women my size is something I wanted to do more in my art anyway. We shall see.

Dark green veil and the purple and blue costume... I love it.

She is a beautiful drawing and exactly what many bellydancers look like in real life. Yes there are many stick thin women who bellydance, but they just don't get the same effect as a real woman.

Thank you for such an inspirational piece of art.

Real woman? You mean slender women are unreal?

Sticks-Solo In reply to Glamazone [2011-01-23 08:33:49 +0000 UTC]

Only the incredibly stick thin models on the catwalk, I know some people have super metabolism and are naturally thin, but most people in the world are not.

In the troupe I dance with we usually have 2 maybe 3 that look like 'Hollywood' bellydancers, the rest of us (around 20) are much more curvy.

To quote a book about bellydancing a woman's torso should 'be soft like a cloud and round like the moon'

not the skinny people we see in the movies (besides a hip shimmy is more effective if the dancer actually has hips)

Most people in the world are neither fat nor stick thin... both variants are unhealthy and unpleasant to see. To be athletic is healthy and beautiful. In ancient times, especially in the poor countries, to be fat meant to be rich and eat better food, that's why fat was considered beautiful, and bellydancers are supposed to be chubby. Anyway, I don't know much about bellydancing, so I won't argue.

It's only kinda sad that "real" women is usually applied to overweight women. Makes one think about standards becoming lower and lower

'Real' women are just average, not labeled, Oprah Winfrey is a real woman - always struggling with her weight, trying to get healthy...that is real, not skinny or fat.

I know I am not healthy and I am trying to improve therefore I am real.

'Real' people are ones who have not had cosmetic surgery (changing their looks to 'fit in' as opposed to someone who has surgery to correct birth defects or say cancer survivors having recontruction surgery.

There is a difference between 'curvy' and 'fat'...You can be curvy and healthy, but not 'fat' it is a fine line but it is possible

Where I live, it's average to be slender and attractive.

Sticks-Solo In reply to Glamazone [2011-01-27 22:22:34 +0000 UTC]

As the old saying goes beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what one country says is attractive will be ugly in another, slender can be attractive so long as its not extreme (bony)most of the men in my region find 'athletic' attractive - not skinny or curvy but think about people from the Olympic either the swimmers or sprint athletics.

I'm just me and I don't care what people think, if I lose weight it will be for my health and no other reason

I am a bellydancer - and to be one you've gotta have something to shake! Bellydance is different from other dance forms in that it celebrates a natural figure - whatever that may be for you as an individual. It celebrates the beauty of the female body and I think art like this helps people to understand that not all bellydancers look like Shakira Its really a really nice piece of art.

you are absolutely correct about the ancient bellydancers being larger they needed 2 be 2 use their bellyand hips. skinny bellydancers can still bellydance but not with such good effect because its not as fuid when their skinny. and the drawing is lovely great work

Wow, i can't believe i never saw this one! So beautiful!! And little toesies, hehe! Cute!
I love the detail on the skirt - so much more detail than i can ever do ... at least convincingly with those bead things and the sheer parts. Everything about this piece is amazing, the sash she's holding behind herself, and the mendhi, and the bracelets, and the earrings, and the pose, and everything! Hah, and i just noticed the toe-rings! I can never draw jewellery that looks authentic, or at least that doesn't look like it was invented poorly on the spot. I love how that just seems to come naturally to you! I totally could take a lot of pointers myself from this! Wow, i can't believe i missed this! Bravo! Instant fave!

Have you ever heard of Meredith/Nemain? She's a BBW bellydancer and an excellent XME fanfic writer. I figure you have...

I'm surprised. She's right up your alley, mindsetwise... I know she has an AFFN account under "Nemain" (I think that's the one she used, anyway), but I've never looked it up. [link] rogress=Complete+fic+by+Nemain&comment=Kurt+and+Kitty+get+caught+in+the+act%2C+and+the+others+try+to+keep+them+apart.+Will+true+love+triumph%3F Some of her main series is hosted at that link, though. She's an excellent writer... and very kinky, XD She also frequents the Nutboard.

I just stumbled across this today, but it's definitely going in my faves!

I love art that celebrates different body shapes, and as I am a heavier girl myself, I am partial to this style. I am also looking into taking up some belly dancing classes, so this really gets me excited. I love it!

Thicker woman are the ones who are supposed to be belly dancers. They are supposed to be larger, and curvier. Hips, and a belly. Thats why they are called "belly dancers". Wow, Bjornieman obviously knows nothing about taste and/or culture.

Speaking from a modern belly dancer that is.
