Description I suck at titles XD
For a quick break away from drawing for others I decided to do more art of my Middle Earth dwarf OC, Tarin. It was also good practice on various things- lighting and textures for example, and I didn't have a proper ref for this, (just a crappy photo of myself) which made it more of a fun challenge.

Not much else to say really, still developing her character so there'll be more art of her in the coming weeks.

Art and character are Β© Rachelle Fryatt- DO NOT USE, REDISTRIBUTE OR ALTER IN ANYWAY.

I'm fond of your female dwarf! Tarin appears to me as a beautiful and at the same time forceful personality. And you did a pretty good job with the details!

More dwarf ladies need to be represented in this way: with a unique flair that makes their heritage undeniable and yet without exaggeratedly detracting from or over-emphasizing feminine beauty. You struck a really good balance here.

Almost every modern depiction of a female dwarf I have seen uses sideburns rather than a full-on beard, as called for in canon by Tolkien. Β Despite the incongruity with canon, I like the sideburn look better. Very, very well done.

She looks exactly how I think a dwarfish woman should be, strong and powerful (and with a little beard) yet still pretty and female

I love it

This lady-dawrf amazed me since the first time I saw her Which was already quite some time ago... I love every little detail... But I have a feeling she isn't particuraily friendly woman Especially not toward my elf-OC probably

But I'm here to ask you about one thing - is there a possibility I could use her (a part of her face to be exact) as a part of icon I'm making for #tolkien-OCs ? After giving you proper credit oufcourse?

RachelleFryatt In reply to Mimiko-Flamemaker [2013-03-08 21:46:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for such a lovely comment! ^^
She's not actually that bad, just a very guarded character Get some ale down her and she'd probably be fine

And that'd be awesome Go ahead ^^

Believe me the pleasure is all mine
You're right ale might help a lot Still elf and dwarf at the same table... might be difficult to handle

Also thank you for permission. Here is the finished icon if you're intrested [link] It's nothing special though

Haha, it would probably be quite an amusing scenario!

I think I'm starting to admire you more and more every day...The shading in this is what catches my eye instantly, it's phenomenal! Then there's all the detail in her hair, in the fur, in her eyes, the way her skin looks and the structure of her face...Yeah just...Amazing work, once again, I can't stop staring ;v;

I think the thing I like most about this picture is that it's accurate to the books lol People seem to forget that dwarf women have beards too. The lighting and textures are fantastic and the detail and originality you put into both her looks and her clothing is amazing. I especially like the scars on her temple, chin and collar bone. It's that attention to the little details that give a character depth. I look forward to learning more about her!

RachelleFryatt In reply to bishounenxluver [2013-03-06 11:55:33 +0000 UTC]

That you very much such a lovely comment, really glad you think so! I think the other thing people forget is that they're not just short people- they have a different anatomical structure to us too- they're wider and stocker all around
I was worried that the scars would be too cliche, but hey, she's a warrior right? She's bound to slip up here and there and get herself wounded

Have you seen the dwarf women's beards in the (amazing) art book, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Chronicles: Art and Design? It could help you with her facial hair!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RachelleFryatt In reply to EmmaFlorian [2013-03-02 13:43:22 +0000 UTC]

I have indeed, but the reason why I went with something more simple is because I based her on me. I'm not one to be all faffy and fancy, I'm scruffy and have my hair up/down in what ever is the most convenient and easy style possible So I figured that Tarin would be the same, and wouldn't bother with all the fancy beard braids and what not She just wants to go kill orcs
