Have you truly observed Moondancer? She wears an ugly, oversized sweater, her mane is a mess, she hasn't bothered to change her broken glasses and keeps them together with cheap tape, she reads books all day... there is literally zero evidence that she likes to work out or engage in physical activity. 

That's not to say people who are out of shape, or chubby, or outright fat can't be cute or attractive. 

And by the way? Magic =/= excuses

So, what I'm reading is, you are basing her ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle purely on outward appearance.

I can read just fine; what is missing is evidence.

Given that at the end of "Amending Fences", we see her, Colgate, Twinkleshine, and Lemon Hearts in padding run out to play some sort of ball game... it seems to me that she has at least a modicum of athletic ability. 

Come "The Cutie Re-Mark" she still has her mane in the same slightly messy bun, and the same worn sweater. 

There isn't anything, however, to suggest she is "heavy" or overweight, nor anything to suggest she is terribly out of shape. 

Heck, even in the flashback in "Amending Fences", when she is looking for Twilight - her glasses have that same white item on the nose bridge - I don't think they are broken, nor that they are taped up - rather, I would posit that it is probably akin to a rubberized pad to keep them from rubbing against her muzzle (unless you have some reason why she would have broken glasses for several years, even after making amends with Twilight and her friends, and even in the IDW comics?)

Add to that the fact she was in Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns (which I dare say would have a rather well-rounded curriculum, including physical education of some sort) and that her body shape and physique match that of her friends identically (which makes sense given they are likely the same base body used in production)... I don't see any evidence to suggest she would be as out of shape as you wish to claim.

Twilight read books all day, went to Ponyville, and managed to keep pace (and in some cases, outshine) ponies such as Applejack and Rainbow Dash whilst heading for the castle. Several times before her ascension she was shown to be able to keep pace with the super athlete and the hard-working apple farmer...

1. We don't see how long they played. for all we know, she fell over gasping for air moments after the episode ended.
2. further evidence she doesn't invest in her appearance.
3. Because nearly everypony is drawn the same way. That's a fault in the art direction.
4. I think we've already established this. She doesn't invest in her appearance. It's practical and easier on the wallet to keep your glasses taped up instead of trying to replace or buy another.
5. Who cares if she's in that school?
6. Twilight managed to keep pace with AJ and RD because she'd come across a technique that made it easier for her to do it. She worked with her own shortcomings instead of going whole-hawg on it.

1) Supposition with nothing to support it, unless you presume an obviously intelligent mare is dumb enough to take on an activity she has no capacity for?
2) Which, again, has no bearing on her athletic ability (which was your original premise)
3) Yet we have seen differing body styles, including out of shape, overweight, absurdly athletic, ultra-bulked, and super skinny. She is none of these, thus average.
4) So why do you base her physical ability on her appearance?
5) If it is like most prestigious schools, one has to maintain grades in all classes, including phys-ed.
6) I'm not talking about just The Running of the Leaves. Dragonshy sees her leading the group, running full-bore, towards the mountain in question. She (and the rest of the group) then proceed to climb a 45* cliff face without breaking a sweat. A Dog and Pony Show has her leading the charge to rescue Rarity, while carrying Spike no less. Come to mention it, she carries Spike a lot. She then proceeds to buck off the rather large Diamond Dog (along with the others) with nary a problem.


It would appear being bookish isn't quite the detriment you claim it to be.

Also - the My Little Pony mobile game (licensed by Hasbro) states - "Moondancer is one beautiful pony, who started to think all friendship was phony." By most standards of beauty, one must maintain at least some semblance of physical conditioning.

Several other examples come to mind, but it is currently closing in on midnight, and I have to be up for work in less than 7 hours. 

Simply put, you have put forth zero evidence to suggest Moondancer is in any way "out of shape".
