Description -----
EDIT rescan: Wow! This scan came out much better than the previous ones. When I compared the new to the old, my jaw literally dropped.
----

For a really long time now I've had a clothing design in mind for whenever Charlie, my OC prince and priest, visits the palaces of Azavon. I've had a difficult time pinpointing on paper exactly what I wanted, and then I watched an episode in the Legend of the Seeker titled "Unbroken", in which Richard Rahl wore clothes a lot like pictured here. When I saw it, I knew that I was wanting something very much like that! So here it is - some concept art. I wanted to put some Azavonian letters or words on there, along with Charlie's golden stephanos shown in the royal setting, but I liked it too much to possibly turn it into a disaster.

My original design before I saw the episode called for the color red, but since that's exactly what it was in the episode I think it should be purple, with the light parts of gold.

That's pretty sweet.

Purple and gold. A symbol of royalty and wealth. Quite elegant.

Very nice; Simple and basic, yet defines a lot of the Charlie's pure state and personality Even though you say the scanner missed lots, the shading here still looks amazing and sufficient. I think your drawing style is also impressive and unique in that Charlie's face looks to be modelled off a real face to achieve that individualised identity

Oh I see and I agree; It's great to see/create a variety of costumes for OC's (something which I haven't really thought much about for mines yet). So would you consider this costume to be Charlie's default or is the armoured version the one you would most likely portray him in battles or official crossover series (Say like The Chronicles of 2100 or TeeJay Versus Absolute-Underground )?

Radiance-Eternal In reply to TeeOfTeeJay [2011-02-20 02:36:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Imparting character to him in here was a challenge, particularly in detailing the face, but I'm also glad with how it turned out. I'll be sure to upload the rescan as soon as possible! I recently got a new scanner that does wonders when combined with Picasa.

Hmm, that's a tough question actually. Each design I've uploaded (and existing design in my head) is meant to portray certain aspects to him - finding a costume that describes his full character and attributes is a very difficult task (if not impossible). I think this one here is an optimal alternate costume, but to be perfectly honest, I don't believe I've uploaded a design fit for being his "default" costume yet. The armored design is a good one (particularly for high-impact battles), but I'm strongly leaning towards a more leanly robed, armor-less mage's attire for his default design. It's hard for me because I can SEE what I think would be a great default design in my head, but when it comes to drawing it, my mental image becomes veiled in a thick, obstinate mist.

Yeah, for the design and the upper left arm (on the left): [link]

Sheesh, looking back on this reveals a lot of proportional errors.

^^ practice makes (almost) perfect (even if I'm not the right one to say that since I draw rarely... during summer I'm lazy and during winter I don't have much time lol)

btw, his face looks good (and without a ref )

Haha, I know what you mean about summer. I've had the whole summer off but I've only done like three drawings.

And thanks! Faces have always been a weak spot for me, so I'm especially glad to hear it. ^_^

Oh yeah, here's that piece I was talking about: [link] I'll be updating it soon to correct some poorly scanned shading (in the legs especially), but this is the general thing.

How do you shade like that? Its awesome I especially love the shading in his arms! Even if you say its better in person, it still looks amazing! I tend to rely more on lining the curves of the muscles but this looks better! The reason I don't do it this way is because I don't really know how... not to mention I don't think I have the patiences to sit and carefully shade in the curves, dips, and shadows of every little muscle... I'd like to though. And yeah, I have to agree, those are some great clothes

Radiance-Eternal In reply to BloodWolfGurl [2010-07-17 00:30:14 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thanks a bunch!

This is actually a new style I picked up. I saw this absolutely stunning piece of Nick Jonas by MeikeZ [link] and took note of the technique she used (the way she drew made it pretty easy to see). Three things I noticed:

1. The trick for this style is realizing that "lines" don't really exist in the real world; only contrast of color (in this case, black and white ).
2. It's important to use pencil strokes that go in the same direction as the material or object (for instance, you can see how the shading lines themselves take on the shape of the biceps - it helps trick the eye into seeing more shape).
3. Skin should always be darker than the white paper - everything should be "shaded" to some extent, since color is always in a state of flux.

You should give it a try sometime! Even if you wound up just putting it in your Scraps. ^_^

Once I can afford real artistic pencils, I do plan on drawing and shading correctly... I promised a friend I'd draw him a headshot of George Clooney LOL (don't ask...)

Radiance-Eternal In reply to BloodWolfGurl [2010-07-17 00:45:45 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha. Bah, now I'm dying of curiosity.

And don't worry about those pencils, I just use an ordinary mechanical pencil. (I'm cheap like that)

BloodWolfGurl In reply to Radiance-Eternal [2010-07-17 00:59:44 +0000 UTC]

I do too but I'm too brutal with my lines with mechanical pencils and I have little patience...

Radiance-Eternal In reply to BloodWolfGurl [2010-07-17 01:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Lol. The problem with me is I draw too lightly...I fear permanence of any kind. I envy you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodWolfGurl In reply to Radiance-Eternal [2010-07-17 01:11:26 +0000 UTC]

Lol nooo, I envy you , I tend to draw what I was told was "hairy lines", that's not a good thing its because I don't have confidence in my own ability apparently...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Radiance-Eternal In reply to BloodWolfGurl [2010-07-23 17:57:38 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I know what you mean. I struggled with drawing lines like that for a very long time. The trick is to find ways to hide it. Then you behind to not worry so much about it and your confidence increases, haha.

BloodWolfGurl In reply to Radiance-Eternal [2010-07-23 21:18:17 +0000 UTC]

Anither problem I have is I tend to draw sitting on my armchair, on a clipboard... lol not very stable...

Aww, thank you so much!

I always find it hard to make a character good-looking on paper, especially if they're plastered in clothing. Going a bit lighter-clothed helped, I think. ^_^ Now I just need to find a way to do that with priest robes.
