My computer is obviously not a potato. Stop being ridiculous.
This is the 2nd picture I generate with the cycles ray tracer.
Ray tracers can take long to render, especially high resolution pictures.
For example, if this was a 1920x1080 picture, the render time would
be 1,5 hours, and if I made better choices regarding number of bounces,
it would have been 0,5 hours.

Amazing. Want to venture into the world of 3D modelling , but am not totally sure of myself just yet to pay out loads of money on software which i just cannot use yet. Love the detail .Β Cannot believe it will take 11 hours to render that , i get frustrated when Photoshop takes 10-15 minutes to render something.

The trick is start render, go to sleep and than go to work. That’s like a 18 hour window. Blender which I used here is free

This is my skin shader.Β  The noteworthy thing is that I use a scatter map.
The scatter color has an impact on how deep the SSS penetrates/spreads.

I think it works like this. BaseColor * ScatteringStrength

So by using black in the scatter map you remove the SSS effect completely.
My scattermaps from Toolbag uses transparency instead of black, so that's
why I have that mix node.

It's orange/peach, because that's the scatter color I use in Toolbag.
The SSS strength I have no clue about, but I hate renders that uses unrealistic SSS
so I went low to be on the safe side.Β  I only checked that nostrils and bellybutton
shadows got a little brighter.

Here's a screenshot of it. In the second pic, I have connected the scatter map to the diffuse,
so you can see what it looks like.

Yes I did model the hay. It's done completely from scratch.

That makes absolute sense.

Personally, I have also experimented with a lot of SSS in blender, of course.
Especially the values. Talked to my friends about it, got opinions and so on- fabricated stuff.

I have come up with a quite good mix. So if you ever have the urge to see my skin setup, let me know.

And you made the hay from SCRATCH!? Did you have a tutorial for that or.. was that done solely by experimenting?Β

I just some of the lights I thought I had turned off had the render icon activated.
I was lucky it still came out good, but jeez, that shit is dangerous, so easy to miss.

If you have a SSS you like, feel free to share it with me. I'll test it out.

Yes, the hay was created from scratch without any tutorials. It's simple actually.
Create a box. Subdivide it. Shape it slightly with PE so it's not perfect.
VU-unwrap it. Give it a hay texture.
Create 3 hay straws. Just a thin plane, with subdivisions, bent a little. Add them to a group.
Activate particles for hay box. Choose group (not object), and select pick randomly
from group.

3D modelling is a craft. The techniques are not that difficult to learn, to master them
on the other hand is difficult, but you can start to create "good enough" objects quickly
if you just begin to create things for your renders. You know, you start out easy, and
then progressively create more detailed objects. This is what I intend to do.
