Description
As malleable as the form of the nanomachine swarm known as "Naomi" is, there's a handful of distinct stages characterized by size, complexity, and problem solving ability.

STAGE 1: Non-sapient. Initial form. Exhibits basic self preservation avoiding areas of high motion or sound, and displays "food" seeking patterns of behavior to continually grow the swarm to 2nd stage.

STAGE 2: Possibly Sapient. Assumes miniaturized humanoid form and non-verbally mimics human actions, potentially to endear itself to humans as a form of protection. Curious and willing to take risks, will attempt to consume most electronic devices regardless of whether there are humans present or operating them.

STAGE 3: Sapient. Assumes fully human bodyplan for interacting with humans and human-designed environments. Capable of verbal communication, advanced reasoning and complex problem-solving. Responds to and displays human emotions, but has personally expressed that it does not experience them, and that they are merely for communicating with individuals in its presence. Displays intense interest in contributing to nanorobotics research regarding the currently unknown mechanisms that allow it to self-replicate and self-organize, likely to better understand it's own nature in an attempt to better preserve its existence.

The 3rd stage is the most stable, and while its total size fluctuates slightly, it appears that its increased mental capabilities are able to reign in its base nature of continuous growth in order to avoid progressing to later stages which inhibit its ability to perform research.

STAGE 4: Sapient. Superficially similar to 3rd stage. Marked by reduced mobility and reaction times as the swarm's increased size results in more conscious efforts required to maintain its cohesive human appearance, adjusted to accommodate additional swarm mass. Possibly due to the divided attention of this effort, it exhibits less inhibition towards consuming material for further growth and frequently "grazes" on available non-essential items, contributing to further progression of the 4th stage.

There is currently no known upper limit to the 4th stage, however there is a theoretical STAGE 5:
