Description Chapter 1- Flights and Flats

The two of them walked through the Sky Harbor airport parking garage in the general direction of their terminal. Neither of them were really one hundred percent ready for this but it was as ready as they'd ever be.

Both girls joked lightly about things that could happen in London. It was a far way to go, and a lot of change to go through.

The day outside was one neither of them would ever forget even though it was the same, typical Arizona summer weather; Hot, dry and loud.

Cicadas buzzed in the trees and looking down at the city they could see the heat radiating off the blacktop. It was nearly one hundred twenty degrees out and it was August 30th, 2016.

The one on the right was slightly taller and had obviously dyed, shoulder length, deep mahogany colored hair with windswept brilliant blue bangs. She wore torn jeans with sharpie drawings on them and a pair of black chucks that looked like they had been to hell and back. Her shirt was gray, composed of light gauzy fabric, had a billion little holes in it and three birds of different colors on the front. Her eyes shined a little and were a perfect transition from dark blue on the outside to a light brown around the center. She wasn't skinny but wasn't over weight, had a light natural tan and a perfect chest to body ratio. Her name is Hazel Underwood.

On Hazel's back was perched an old backpack patterned with multicolored squares that was dirty at the bottom and had pins sewn into it that all read different things ("Sorry Mario but your princess is in another castle", "Programed to be awesome", "Say NO to drugs, yes to Pocky.") and was swollen full of things for the trip.

Her friend that walked next to her had deep tanned skin and dark brown hair that reached toward the bottom of her shoulder blades and red windswept bangs that clung to her forehead. The eyes that sat in their sockets were deep chocolate brown and shimmered with intelligence but also with a slight hint of mischievous childishness that would never leave. Two moles, of the same size, called the dimple on her right cheek home; another, larger, sat comfortably on her other cheek. She wore an old worn cookie monster shirt, clean but used blue converse, and well-fitting jeans that show cased her butt nicely. Her name was Paige Fremont.

The two of them had sent most of their things to the new flat in London so that they didn't need to check any bags. Hazel was most worried about her instruments. She loved her guitar to pieces and a new ukulele could get expensive…

They both went through security and then boarded the plane, touching the exterior before for good luck.

Hazel's phone buzzed impatiently in her pocket. She sighed and pulled it out, it was her mom. The text said, 'Be safe and call me when you get there. I'll miss you.'

Hazel closed her eyes momentarily and put her phone away.

"What was that?" Paige asked looking at her red-eyed friend.

"Mom saying goodbye… again…" Hazel sighed.

"How many times is that now?" Paige asked

"Counting last month when we got the address confirmed, two weeks ago when I started packing, my birthday ten days ago, every day for the last five days, and the numerous times this morning including when she woke me up? About two and a half trillion…" She exaggerated, stuffing her backpack in the overhead compartment.

"You are her baby and her only daughter, Haze," Paige pointed out, sitting down at the window seat.

"Yeah I know…" Hazel sighed.

"Anyway…To London?" She asked cheerfully after a moment's awkward silence

Hazel only nodded in response.

~~~
"I hate flying…" Hazel complained standing as they landed in London after an excruciatingly long flight.
"Well…" Paige shrugged and began to tease her. "You chose to move to London, across the world from where you grew up, and you hate flying. We could've swam."
Hazel rolled her eyes, "Smartass."
"That's my name don't wear it out," Paige grinned playfully.
Hazel smiled and grabbed her backpack out of the overhead, putting her laptop back inside of it.
"So… Zelda and Coralie are supposed to be waiting, right?" The shorter asked the taller.
"Yeah they said that they had a surprise for us too…" Hazel answered. "I'm a little terrified because Zelda used to say that she was going to get a pet raccoon when we moved into a flat together."
"How long did she want to do that?"
"The whole time… in fact the last time she said something was right before she left pencil land,"
"Oh God…"
Hazel nodded and swung her backpack over her shoulder and thought back to a sleepy conversation that she and Paige previously had on the plane.
~~~

"What if we meet them?" Paige asked, turned at an odd angle to look at her friend.

"What if we meet who?" Hazel asked.

"I dunno… like the old cast of Doctor Who… Or David Tennant… Or what if we meet Tom or Liam or Charlie or Alex…" She said excitedly.

"I doubt it…. London is a big place," Hazel answered shortly, thinking back on times when she was a super fan girl of all those things.

"You know that you'd still LOVE meeting ANY or all of them… Remember all the things you used to talk about that you'd do to Tom?"

"Remember your plan to kidnap Liam at Vidcon?" Hazel answered smirking.

"Yea-Well… You can't say you didn't encourage it!" She said quietly.

"This is true. I'm really upset that at Vidcon 2012 we didn't even get to see them other than on stage, I really had them set on signing my shoes,"

"You strange child," Paige laughed.

"Tis why we're friends, love," Hazel answered.
~~~
"Hazel," Paige said snapping her fingers in Hazel's face.
"Huh?" She said shaking the memory away.
"It's time to get off the plane," Paige said slowly and by her expression Hazel could tell this wasn't the first time she had said something to her.
"Oh, yeah, sorry…" Hazel stumbled over her own words and exited the plane with nice parting words from the stewardesses.
"I feel a bit bad for Zelda and Coralie though… I mean they're both adjusted to this time zone and it's like one AM," Paige said.
"Well they never did keep the best sleep schedules," Hazel answered slightly sleepily.
Paige shrugged as they walked through the gate and saw Zelda and Coralie waiting for them.
Zelda's long gingery hair turned from a vibrant red to a clean cut blue at the tips.
Coralie's hair color coordinated with her chocolate eyes and hung in a twisting braid to her just a tinge above her elbows.
Both girls stood an average height and each held something of the plane worn travelers.
Zelda had an old, wearing guitar bag, adorned with pins, patches and stickers on her back. Hazel let out a squeal and sprinted forward, backpack jingling with pins. "ZELDA YOU ARE THE BEST!" She hugged the ginger, nearly strangling her. It had been nearly 3 weeks since Hazel had held her guitar and her callouses were fading ever-so slightly. "Can I have him!? Can I play GH now?" She said excited like a small school girl. Zelda nodded and handed her the guitar bag.
Hazel had the guitar in her hands in seconds and she slid over to the waiting seats setting her backpack down she began to play. The first few notes rang genially but they grew in strength as Hazel's hands danced their way across the fret board. The other girls watched for a moment but they continued to progress forward in time and they let their friend enjoy her reunion.
Coralie held something for Paige, something Paige couldn't live without after high school. In her hands Coralie held a lightweight but full-sized cherry red keyboard. An ecstatic grin pasted itself on Paige's face as she took the keyboard from the very willing Coralie. Paige went and sat next to Hazel, turning it on she listened to the white noise hum of it before picking up the same song as Hazel was playing.
The four of them sat there for a few moments letting the music overcome them all. When Hazel stopped playing and hugged her guitar the others snapped out of the daze
"My mom told me to call her when I landed," Hazel said checking the time. "But it's… Oh… it's like 5PM in Arizona…"
"Call her Haze…" Paige said.
Hazel pulled out her phone, called her mom and after a few minutes, "Alright. Okay mom… I love you too mom… I'll talk to you later… Bye."
"You ready to go to the flat?" Coralie asked, her voice rolling in a light Irish accent.
"After hours of sitting still, yes," Paige answered.
"Agreed," Hazel said putting her guitar back in the bag and putting it on her shoulders, picking up her backpack and carrying it in one hand.
The four left the airport and went back to the flat, with no idea what was going to happen next.
