Several ways.

1. Dark has his right ear bitten into, so it's missing a good number of crystals.

2. Dark's bottom quill set twist up, while Mephy's are longer and hang down.

3. Dark is usually thinner than Mephy, and he also has (not always drawn) a scruff of fur on his left side that doesn't go down flat because of an old injury causes the hair to grow against the rest in direction.

4. Dark's sclera is red, Mephy's is pinkish, and Dark's irises are a brighter green. Mephy has no pupils (in story as well) that are visible, but it does not impare his ability to see.

5. Dark's canines are usually more prominent.

6. Mephy's chest fluff is more neatly kept.

7. Dark usually has telltale signs of insomnia under his eyes.

In the fics, you'll learn as time goes on the best ways. You don't even have to color them in to tell them apart after a while.

There's moments that tease it as a joke, mainly at Shadow's expense of the joke (such as Mephy commenting how Mobian males wear only shoes, socks and gloves, so why does Shadow feel the need to wear a towel after a shower? Then Shadow realizes that Mephy and Dark wear virtually no clothing due to the crystal coating on the hands and feet, which makes them Mobian nudists. Shadow then proceeds to beat his own head with his shoe for realizing they're naked.). Mephy also likes hugging on Shadow, and has no problem with burying his face in Shadow's quills to hide, or tends to migrate towards Shadow some nights. Since Mephy is like a 10-11 year old Mephiles who's emotionally and fundamentally stunted, Shadow just gave up on calling him out on it and let's him.

Dark (being a closer representation of the original Mephiles) has a natural defiance towards Shadow, but tends to mess with him for kicks, or has lately used that fact as a means of communicating the need for help by hoping Shadow catches his out of characterness.

Now, my other fics that are outside of the TD Universe tend to have quite a bit of Mephiles-Shadow interaction. One short series (5 one shots) features Mephiles getting injured near the end of the last boss fight, Shadow taking pity on that (feelin it was kind his fault), and decides against just leaving Mephiles there to rot. This eventually accumulates to the 200 years later future where Shadow and Mephiles are the only one's left from the 2006 timeline that did not die of old age or other causes, and form a type of bond that resembles a kind of brotherly one. It's also an AU one, but has gained enough popularity that that particular Mephiles (called Capgras!Mephiles for the state of mind his mind takes in the first two stories) has been used in other stories by other people. This Mephiles is one that's been given more freedom to explore the world around him, though afraid of relapsing back to his old self.

I actually like Mephadow as much as other pairups, but given that I have family that likes to check out my stuff, I have to be clever about hiding it in such a way that you can see it, but only if you see it that way. You'll see quite a bit of Mephiles and Shadow images in my gallery if you take a chance to look.

I just won't write the obvious yaoi stuff. I feel like that's out of my style. So I just hide hints in stuff anyway. XD

Not much into Sonamy... I kinda enjoy anything between Mephiles, Shadow, Silver, Sonic and the other guys more.

Yeah, cantaloupe is Dark's favorite food, to the point that he can be bribed with it. He also wants Mephy to get him one like this: [link] ... which is now a mini running gag, because they cost a lot, and so far, Mephy has found one, but in the midst of Chaos and whatnot, it got forgotten and kinda went bad before Dark could eat it, and Mephy keeps asking every shop vendor and person he meets if they know where to buy one. His usual statement is "But I can't leave yet! I have to buy a square cantaloupe, and I haven't found it yet!"

I was gonna put Iblis in there, but I figured we needed a simple Mephy and Dark pic, since it's been a while...

Well, I tried to make a Chibi Dark look skinny, which is kinda hard to do with Chibi style, since it's supposed to be kinda chubby, but I know what you mean...

But yeah, I figured you might like this, after all the sadness going on in the stories lately...

True; it has been a while since we've gotten a pic of just the two of them. Too bad that whenever this happens, Dark is never genuinely happy. He's always annoyed or embarrassed.

I understand; kinda hard to make him look skinny when the style dictates that he's supposed to look a bit chubby.

I do; kid fluff like this always lifts my mood. It's just so light and innocent.

Normally I try to restrain myself when it comes to faving your gallery, as otherwise I'd be fave bombing the entire thing, but this was just begging to be faved.
