The avatar?
Well, you make a 50 by 50 pixel one (or find one that no one will mind that you use, or ask for some one to make you one if they don't mind. Mine are always from scratch.) that's uses no more than 15 KB or memory.
I use Gimp to animate it, and usually the first version is over 15 KB, so I optimize it (in other words, remove the part of the next frame that looks exactly the same and same the animation as the images stack one each other. The result looks flawlessly smooth. The computer will do it for you.).
I start often with a bigger image to make some details in, then scale it (when you scale in GIMP, it smooths out the pixels and imitates professional... but in reality, I don't know what I'm doing half the time. I just... do it XD).
One you have an avatar finished, upload it by clicking on your profile to get to your page, then clicking the avatar or something. I think you hit that edit thing that pops up.
gifs, jpegs, and pngs are good.
Gifs are often the animated ones. But some of the quality may be degraded if you try to take a clip from a real show. That's why I make mine in Paint, so it won't pixelate.
Jpegs are another picture quality. It's okay, but sometimes can be fuzzy and harder to edit later.
Pngs are my favorite. The quality is wonderful, and for Paint images, the quality stays the same as it did on the canvas. It's clear and easier to edit too.
I work mostly in Gifs and Pngs.
Look for a tutorial on some neat tricks you can try too.
[link] is GIMP. That stands for "Gnu Image Manipulation Program". It's like photoshop, but free. It's a little easier to use IMO, too, and I had CLASSES in photoshop. It's great for animation gifs, and fun for photo manipulation.
It's also great for digital coloring, and has all the fun effects you'd never find in paint.
I kinda use Paint and Gimp together most of the time though. Paint to trace my drawings with the curve tool and Gimp to select the lineart only, remove the rest and color.
It's easy to use with a mouse too, and I know a lot of people who use it.
I use it to recolor somethings for personal signatures and wallpapers, and it's fun to freehand.
The only thing is that the only way to save in layers is to save as a gif... and that degrades any airbrush only layers, so if you want that added... wait until the end.
That's the only thing that's a bit messed up. But the rest is great. My brother can use it so well, people would swear that it's got to be photoshop.
Does that help? ^^
