How did you achieve the smooth gradient shading on the crouching figure? Ink wash?

What's ink wash? I mean, how can it be done with ballpoint pen? O_o
I was crosshatching the character in the same way, as all the rest of the picture, but with the edge of the...pen's writing part XD And a Very light pressure to it.
For example the demon, Soolax, was cross-hatched with the lead of the pen being put straight against the paper and with a normal pressure applied.

I tend to take a large dark spot with the pen then water that down and drag it across the part of the image that I want the wash either with a brush or my finger.
