Description

Ivana led the ancient mage through the underground city without incident. They spoke little because around any corner the mage hunter could be waiting for them. The golems should prevent such an encounter, but Reginald Tremere was skilled at avoiding most magical constructs. She knew Rhathgond wouldn’t stand much of a chance against a man trained and equipped to counter magical attacks and defenses, but she wasn’t sure how these techniques would work against technology. Regardless of how well scientists like Lady Quantum, Dr. Nowacka, those working in Division 0, and Dr. Candace Roberts. For good or ill, all their advances for this world’s technology were still ages behind those she possessed from her futuristic time and reality. Le Suisse’s dossier on Tremere was detailed, but magic was the X factor she couldn’t calculate into her tactics for this extraction nor was she certain the safe house she built for Rhathgond would be sufficient against the mage hunter.

Near the entrance to the underground city was a bridge over a fiery chasm. A magically created river of lava made as an ancient deterrent to enemy forces trying to overtake the civilization who built it. Probably a group of surviving Atlanteans like Etyssa if Ivana hazarded a guess. Only a quarter mile hike over the bridge to the outcropping where her pocket fighter remained ready for departure. And standing at the crest stood the mage hunter holding a broadsword. He ran a gloved hand over the blade igniting it. She fired a blaster bolt at him while the right thigh armoring opened to launch a micro missile destroying the rocky bridge between them.

“Is there another exit?” she asked the mage over her shoulder.

    “There are several,” he replied.

“Go to one now. I’ll hold him off.”

The dust started to clear revealing Tremere unharmed standing at the edge of the blast. Two more blaster bolts fires impacted some sort of invisible shield as they bounced in odd directions just before his chest.

“How do you think a mage hunter tracks and fights mages?” Rhathgond said behind her.

“Why are you still here? Get going!” She removed a small device from her hip ridge and threw it towards the base of the bridge. “Run! And shield your eyes!”

Ivana ran behind him as the small device flooded the area with a blinding white light. Using her HUD hooked into her implant, other similar devices she’d dropped throughout the city also activated flooding more areas in blinding white light. If Tremere crossed the bridge, she hoped he would assume they traveled in the path of lights which to his special vision appeared completely dark. Even if it didn’t completely work, the tactic provided time to put some distance between them. She also hoped the fighter’s sensors registered the mage hunter’s arrival and activated her backup plan. She programmed the autopilot herself, so it should be ready on the other side when they arrived at the alternate entrance she was aware of…assuming Rhathgond led her that way.

They ran for an hour through the city. The lights should blind the hunter, but she knew his other senses were heightened. He could follow their sounds of their footfalls on the stone, their breathing, or even follow the scent of their sweat. No sign of him the entire time although she kept a watchful eye out for him. As they neared the exit on the far side of the mountain deep in a forest, he stood there waiting for them. Ivana advanced between the two men and activated her suit’s energy shield. She fired a few blaster bolts as he closed the gap deflecting them with his fiery blade. No natural person possessed such lightning-fast reflexes. The bolts impacting her shield draining her power supply. At the edge of it, he slowed his pace to penetrate the barrier. How could he know this? Nobody outside of her inner circle knew this fact about energy shields. Raising her right arm, she held back his blade as it neared her face. This shouldn’t be possible…

The Dark Code 015“Wakey, wakey, Puddy Tat.” Erica groaned as she tried and failed to move her left arm. Restrained? Last thing she remembered was approaching an abandoned warehouse in Omaha near the Missouri River where they tracked the traitor. Elizabeth Morgan, or whoever she was, left a very easily followed trail to this building, so she cautiously approached with Mikhail at her side. He said something, but she couldn’t remember what before feeling a cloth placed over her mouth. “Typical lazy cat. I don’t have all day, and the dosage I used on you wasn’t even enough to knock out Duster or Cracovia for this long. WAKE UP!”, She felt sluggish, but another attempt to move her arm resulted with the same inability to move. Her eyelids were heavy. With some concentrated effort, they finally opened to reveal a dark room with steel walls and floor. Light came from somewhere, but she couldn’t focus enough to tell from where. She heard motion to her right like someone crouching beside her. “Dermot O’Rourke was right. That hot Irish temper of yours is easy to manipulate. You make mistakes when you get emotional. It’s why your former partner left you, wasn’t it? The Englishwoman? Bailitheoir was her name, wasn’t it? How many times did she have to save your ass when you barged into a situation without thinking it out rationally? And now you have the younger one who gets distracted by attractive men, right?” “What have you done to me?” she asked weakly. “Just a little dose of your run of the mill chloroform, nothing more,” the voice replied. She could now tell at least it was feminine. “That and removal of one of your claws. My client really wanted one. You won’t mind since it’ll grow back.” Her vision was improving but not enough to make out details. Could be the aftereffects of the chloroform or the darkness of the room. The woman stood, and she followed the noise to see clearly Mikhail lying prone on the floor a few feet away. “You bitch,” she murmured. “He’s not harmed. Took a little stronger dosage to knock him out, but with his superior strength I couldn’t take the chance he’d wake too soon.” She heard the woman rattle something in glass. Probably her missing claw in a vial. “Normally by now I’d be long gone, but my client required I deliver a message. Dermot says thank you for the nanites. He’s wanted these for some time but didn’t know exactly how to extract them. Fortunately removing a single claw was sufficient. And since I’ve fulfilled this part of the job, I’m afraid I have to…” A banging to her left startled her captor. In the light shining on Mikhail’s body, she saw the woman run for her escape through a door. Dressed head to toe in black with equally black hair. At the door the woman turned and raised a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun. , The blast was deafening, but after the flash she saw two friends rushing after in pursuit. Rebecca Tremaine wearing a new outfit as her Starlight persona along with her boyfriend, Sherman Jones, wearing his Ricochet attire. The young woman stopped by her chair as he took position before her to take the brunt of the shot. “That hurt!” he exclaimed as he continued pursuing the attacker into the dark hallway. “What are you doing here?” she asked as Rebecca knelt beside her cousin. “Why didn’t you use your power to stop her?” “Something’s blocking me.” “Blocking you? How can anyone block a person who controls time?” She watched the other pull something from a pouch on her belt then placed under her cousin’s nose. He immediately started to shake his head. “Can you hear me, Micky? It’s Becca.” “Da,” he relied slowly trying to move. “What hit me?” “Take it easy, coz. You got a face full of some sort of nerve agent I suspect.” “Rebecca?” she asked. The other woman stood and walked over to crouch by her chair. “Mom sent us after your meeting. She knew you wouldn’t listen to her. Now…where is it?” “Where’s what?” “Something here is blocking me. Usually takes extremely strong magic or…ah…here it is.” Erica couldn’t tell what she was doing, but noticed when Rebecca stood, she placed something into the pouch on her belt before placing her finger up to her ear. “Sherman…are you there?” “This woman just parkoured a thirty-foot wall that would make Spiderman jealous!” she heard through the woman’s comm unit in her ear. “She’s long gone.” “Nothing we can do for now,” Rebecca replied. “Come back in and help me with these two. We need to get them back to the bunker, then we can decide how to go after her and avoid further traps.” “Now that hurt,” she said as Mikhail stood and walked over to break her shackles. “Mom told you not to walk into an obvious trap. That woman played you, and you fell for it.” “Could you stand by if it were Sherman she targeted? Could you?” “Probably not,” Rebecca replied helping her out of the chair. “But Mom’s right. She had to sit by the side when that thing happened with Dad last year. She hated it, but she did the tactical thing, and my father was rescued without a problem. It wasn’t easy, but it was the smart thing to do.” “She’s a helluva lot stronger than me. I couldn’t do that,” Erica said as she stood finally free of her shackles. “Stronger than both of us. Now let’s get out of here.”...
