awesome!! <3 walk cycles aren't easy, but you did a great job on this! so much personality!
i also like to use photoshop for animating...it's easier than flash which can get so buggy sometimes!

yep yep yep, even though i'm using an ancient version of photoshop (elements 3), as long as it can make .gifs, you can animate with it. if you have a nicer version, like CS4, it comes with an animation window that you can line up your frames and preview at 30 fps (though for this gif, i had to settle for 10 fps). when i made this [link] i was using cs4, and would preview the frames, then export the layers/frames as .jpgs, and then i'd put them in aftereffects (just like if you had hand drawn it)
photoshop in it's essence is a very simple animation tool, if you think about it. layers can be frames, and you can change the opacity of layers to create onion skin, put in backgrounds, etc
for this gif, i sketched the underlying walkcycle as a stick figure, then i took a layer and drew my character over frame one. then i took that sketch and manipulated it for the remaining frames in the stick figure walkcycle, so that there was a consistency: [link] then i drew the final lineart and color over that
