Description Here's another piece from my project. It's a Crew Quarter, some street of dormitories where hard workers take their rest

I saw this pop up in my faves, and i thought "huh, i dont remember faving this..."

And now that im seeing this for the second-but-feels-like-first time, i almost want to fave it a second time. nice job!

First off, this is wonderful! I love the style you've done this in, and all the little details. As a Canadian, I especially like the little gem in to bottom right! Having said that, there's one thing that's bothering me, since I'm weird about things like this. The walkways seem to be covered with loosely hung plastic sheeting and the people inside don't seem to be wearing helmets which means the area is probably full of air. So, since it looks like this is on the moon, I'd expect the plastic sheeting to actually be ballooning out, as the vacuum outside sucks at it. Again, wonderful piece of art and I don't mean to criticize, I'm just being a nerd.

Reminds me of a book i read a few months back, Crater. The moon landscape, resting areas, glorious!

Those solar panels probably powers non-essential systems, because given the efficiency problems we had yet to solve, those panels aren't big enough to power the entire crew quarters.Β

That depends in large part on the surface area of the solar panels, and the efficiency of the solar panels in whatever year this is set in.Β  As of 2018 (the most recent year for which I can find data), the most efficient commercial solar panel has an efficiency of about 22.8 percent.Β  That works out to roughly 175 watts per square meter.Β  However, there are companies developing even more efficient solar cells with an efficiency of over 40 percent.

Now, keep in mind that the typical home installation generates 5 kW of electricity.Β  The International Space Station generates 120 kW with an array of 8 panels, each of which is roughly 11.9 meters wide by 34.1 meters long.Β  That's enough to power 40 homes.Β  Also keep in mind that aΒ modern LED lightbulb can generate 760 lumens (roughly equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb) with only 8.5 watts.

And that's in 2018.Β  This is obviously set sometime in the future, when solar panels may have exceeded 40% efficiency.Β  (There are already theoretical solar cells with 58% efficiency by using 3 or more P-N semiconductor junctions, each of which responds to a different wavelength of light.)

EDIT: Having said all that... I'm not disagreeing with you.Β  My theory is that the base has one or more nuclear reactors (maybe even fusion reactors), and the solar panels are primarily for backup/supplementary power.

Those are all very valid points. I had not accounted for technological development rates. In all likelihood there really would be nuclear reactors underground or nearby as their main power source. It's what I would do in their situation.

I totally agree.Β  The base is just too big to be powered entirely by those solar panels.Β  Although, the solar panels *might* be enough to power the crew quarters, especially if they have a battery system.Β  Maybe it's just me, but on the moon, I would want to have double or triple redundancy for both power and life support.
