santorini is the largest island in a small group of islands which form a circle - they are actually a caldera, the remnants of a volcano. the caldera is mostly under water, and the santorini islands are what's visible of the caldera's walls above water. when looking at the cliffs of santorini, you can see the layers of solidified lava. on top of that are the whitewashed towns and villages.
