Do you draw other people's COs in a scene of some sort? If so, is it okay if I requested to get mine done in an amazing picture of yours?

My favorite part of your work is always the backgrounds and landscapes you come up with, they're all absolutely incredible. I really like this one, but do you have a version of it without the OC in there, just the cavern?

i dont have the PS file anymore unfortunately but funnily enough i was thinking of painting a version where it is just the cavern.

There's a free favorite in it for you if you do. That's worth like, all the things.

That looks incredible, utterly spectacular work
Sunshine Smiles looks phenomenal and the landscape around him at least as much so, gorgeous work.
And here I am working on a piece of fanart for Bernd myself, and now I am super jealous
May I ask how you created this? hand-drawn? Digitally painted? what software used, if any? etc.

Thank you very much Akernis!
hehe yay more fan art! Will be looking out for it when you finish!
I'm assuming there is a certain part you are wondering about or are you just asking about everything as a whole ?

Ah ok then.
Well to start I work in Photoshop CS5.1 and I started this piece with a sketch as you might have expected. From that sketch I made silhouettes in various shades of grey of just the shapes I wanted to use which is a method I use quite a lot in compositions like this one. Since I like to work in greyscale initially I went through each silhouette layer and started painting the rock surface texture (this is most visible in the closest rick to the right).
For rocks I always tend to use the chalk brushes to begin detailing them and I would usually keep detailing it with the brush but for this picture I tried something new. I took a simple stock of just a rock texture and then overlaid it on each layer lowering it to about 20% opacity. I then painted over it again because the lighting was off on the texture and it felt too un natural, so applying an extra layer of brush strokes to help bring out the texture better really helped.
The sky light is just a simple job by using the lasso tool to get quick sharp shapes that I could fill easily and then using a soft pressure brush to make it look like there is a strong light descending down into the cavern. The reflections were rather easy to do because of the perspective I was using so I could get away with just taking the cliffs and sunshine smiles and just flipping them upside down with a few shade alterations to make it look better as a reflection. As for the distortion that was just a simple job with the smudge tool.
As for the colour I always start my colouring by using a "soft light" layer because it gives a nice base for when I use the "overlay" and "colour" layers later. The brush I always use to start colouring my art is a soft edge brush with pressure opacity. I also make good use of masks if needed to help define the colours first. Once I have gotten a nice colour palette base then I start using the "overlay" and "colour" layers. I use these to basically make the colours a lot more bold so I used it a lot in the water glare/edges and in the cave ambient light, they also helped to further blend the texture into the scene. These "overlay" and "colour" layers are extremely important to make you colours pop better and not appear flat. Also using a wide range of colours is a big part of using colour, for example if the rock is warm brown throw some orange, reds, purples, pinks maybe a few blues sampled from the water in this picture and some minty colours to go with that. Lastly I used a curves layer to help boost my light and dark areas.
I'm not amazing at explaining my methods but I hope this was somewhat useful.
If there was an aspect you think I missed and needs explaining just let me know!

Thank you, that was exceptionally informative, very detailed and well-phrased
I had really not thought about many of those steps. I will definitely have to do some more experimentation when I have the opportunity.
You described the environment and effects brilliantly, but you did not mention the character himself, if you could describe something about that process as well I would appreciate it
Also, how long does such a piece usually take to do?

Sorry for the rather late reply but I'll try to cover what i did for Sunshine Smiles.
First off just like the back ground I worked from a sketch and then straight after added a darker grey silhouette for the body shape, the wings, and the mane/tail. From there I create a layer on top of each aspect that will act as my shading layer. For me using a mask here is important to make sure I have minimal need to clean it up later ad=nd so it sticks to just the given area. initially I use a chalk brush with an opacity of around 30% - 40% to mark out exactly where my shaded areas are and to define edges. From there I'd use a soft opacity pressure brush with a grey slightly darker than the grey used for the silhouette. I would gradually keep using a darker and darker grey until I was satisfied that I had portrayed the light properly. I would then go back and add the highlights with a lighter shade of grey and then merge the shading layer and the silhouette into one. This process is repeated again for the wings with a little more emphasis on defining the feather edges. For the mane I once again did it initially on greyscale with a brush that is based off a set I downloaded from a tutorial, I remade them to work better for me but this step is most likely not necessary. This time instead of I use a shade a little darker than the silhouette I use one a little bit above the silhouette colour. I keep brushing it in long strokes to ensure none of the strands cross because it looks unnatural if you don't do it right. Once I have all of my hair strands to save time I use the dodge tool to bring out the lighter shades in the hair. From there instead of using a colour layer to colour the hair I use a gradient map and use about 4 different shades of blue to accurately make it look like real hair. The eyes are the only part that are done in full colour from th
