The art may be shitty, but the results are really good looking, I promise! I'd do this with a tablet, but my hands are shaking anyway, so putting the effort into making the thing sparkle with beauty didn't seem necessary.
If you are cosplaying Pearl, Lapis Lazuli, or Peridot from Steven Universe, this is a good tutorial for making a gem. This is more or less the same method Homestucks used to make horns back when that was popular, so you know this should be good. We had several years to perfect our method.
Trust me when I say the tin foil is a necessary evil! It might suck, but your clay will never totally dry if it's solid. This means when you handle your gem, or if you hit it, it will slowly become deformed and sad-looking. Don't spend all this time and effort to get something deformed and sad-looking!
It is a very good idea to add the top coat as well, to avoid paint flaking off and showing the white/whatever color underneath.
