【BACKSTORY】

At a young age, Senri’s father walked out on the family, leaving the boy to be raised by his mother single-handedly in a new prefecture. Settled in an apartment, she didn’t want to move so soon after just arriving, so she placed the burdens on her shoulders and made sure Senri had everything every other normal child had that she could offer.

Though he was a child, Senri knew that his mother was working hard because of him, so he hoped that at least he could make her proud of him. He wanted to excel in something so at least she had something to brag about her family. Growing up, Senri had always been a hard worker, though he was always mindful to never excluded people, always willing to help. Due to this, he got a lot of compliments and was highly praised. He kept up his good behaviour. If they were praising him, then didn’t it mean he was doing well? Even if sometimes helping became a chore, he tried his best to help others and keep himself in the top ranks of the school.

Senri was a bookworm. When he had free time, he rarely played games, and chose to read books. From prose to poetry, short novels to full series. They kept him company and as such he had always wanted to be a writer since a young age. Writing became his hobby, and he blossomed in it easily as he picked up bits of what he read into his literature. He was often called the “literature boy”, almost always saying “yes” to the question “have you read this book?” and always getting the highest scores in literature and language.

This continued all the way to high school, where he regularly started to join writing contests, in hopes to achieve more, and to show his mother that she didn’t raise someone without dreams. He kept his cheerful demeanor all the way up to second year, when he was betrayed by a friend.

Senri submitted one of his polished stories based on his narrative he wrote for a school assignment to yet another competition, one even more large scale than the usual ones he joined, but instead he was banned from multiple contests across the country for plagiarism. In shock, he tried to show proof that it was original work, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. It was only after the weekend that someone he referred to as a friend in his class was congratulated for his outstanding written piece, and that Senri was called to the teacher’s office to be reprimanded for his shameful behaviour. He tried to justify himself, but it was no use - the teachers were bribed with money from a more powerful figure.

Realising that perhaps having a name was no use if it could be so easily sullied, Senri began to distrust people, slowly starting from those he didn’t know to even friends, drastically becoming colder even to his friends, becoming unwilling to help. His name soon faded away from the memory of the school as quickly as the other student’s as he made no more achievements. Senri also started to do less and less to excel in class. His writing got mundane, he stopped putting extra effort in memorizing his sciences, and he stopped thinking about his mother’s smile. So long he passed by, and he wasn’t inconvenienced, he believed it was the best way to live in life.

However, the greatest change was he stopped writing. He said his goodbyes in a new chapter on his unfinished story that has amassed over tens of thousands of readers on an online site. There was so much noise and confusion, begging him to keep going, to keep writing, that a small setback shouldn’t be what stopped him. He was about to delete his work, so no one else could steal it, when he received an email, asking if he wanted to be a ghostwriter for an article to be featured in a magazine.

A ghostwriter? Why would he? Despite his doubts, he was somewhat interested, so he asked for more details. After a few emails, Senri decided to save his story before deleting it from the site, and landed himself a temporary job as a ghostwriter for a column in a magazine. He continued this work until he graduated from high school, where he was regrettably labelled as one of the largest disappointment of their grade, falling from being a shining star to an average student who didn’t even have plans to continue to university.

Despite his mother’s pleas, Senri continued to stay distant to others, working from home as he expanded his portfolio and went on writing for other articles, blogs and such, before he finally got a job to ghostwrite his first book. At this point he had become a master of copying styles, and he easily churned out a book of words back to the commissioner.

While he made a good amount of money, in addition to some part time jobs he picked up, Senri’s mother was less than pleased with her son’s future, believing it to be bleak and hopeless. So without telling him, she enrolled him into an academy, in hopes that there he would be able to flourish and learn how to write for his own, and properly publish it under his name. When he heard the news, he was devastated and in denial, but after realising perhaps he had been selfish towards his mother. If his mother was trying his best, he should too. So he decided that he would go back to school.

Except when he finally saw the registration form he saw that he was signed up for screenwriting, not creative writing! Isn’t this academy equivalent of high school? ...This might be a new chapter of challenges for him, but if it was for his mother, as a way to make up… he suppose he'll do it.
