Description Mikoyan MiG-25 foxbat, chasing SR-71 blackbird

Just adding some little fact, why MiG-25 will never ever ever touched the SR-71
- As many of you knows very well, MiG's Tumansky R-15B turbojets are redlined at mach 2.8, while the SR-71, with its Pratt & whitney J58 'turbojet-with-compressor-bleed-bypass' is capable of sustained mach 3+ flight
- And service ceiling of MiG-25 is far below service ceiling of SR-71 (as far as 5200 m if carrying four missiles), so diving to gain some airspeed is impossible
- MiG's Smerch-A radar has enormous power that enough to 'burn' through enemy bombers jamming system, But i'm not sure it can burn through SR-71's jamming system

i will add more as soon as i have more info!

very cool, I have made one with a similar idea. Check it out on my page

MiG-25 would never touch the SR-71? LOL'd

But I must say, something here is right, and something is wrong. For example, actual speed of MiG is 2,83 mach, but it was limited by purpose. It could reach more, but pilots - don't.

But there were problems on earlier versions - for example, few lethal crashes by not perfect stabilisers, and waaay too much power. One test pilot died, trying to beat the lift-off record.

But to be honest, these planes (except of the purpose) are quite similar. Even more, some MiG's were as expensive as SR-71, and did very specific things, again like SR-71. If you want, I can tell you all the facts about these two machines. It's not to show that "Blackbird" is bad, but to show that these machines are different. Even purpose.

Ok, i said Foxbat's speed is redlined at mach 2.8, this limit has to be imposed to prevent the turbines from overspeeding and overheating, that may caused them to be damaged beyond repair. The speed of the Foxbat indeed can exceed mach 2.8 for short period of time, for instances on 6 November 1971 an Egyptian MiG-25 was tracked flying at mach 3.2, but this causes substantial damage to the engine

The MiG-25 doesn't need to exceed MACH 2.8 if used properly. The MiG-25 was meant to be a part of a vast GCI network that was meant to vector jets to efficiently intercept intruders. That said, the MiG-25 would likely be intercepting a blackbird from the front or the sides as it penetrates soviet airspace where the closing velocity of the SR-71 would be used against it in a missile engagement. The least a MiG-25 can do will be to hard lock the blackbird with its RP-25 and force the blackbird to turn tail and flee; while this will certainly ensure that the blackbird will outrun the MiG, it also means that it likely has to abandon its mission. In your awesome depiction of a MiG-25 v SR-71 engagement, the MiG-25 is still close enough to squeeze off some R-40 shots, which do have the kinematic performance to catch the blackbird in a tail aspect pursuit but only if launched from short range (R-40R IIRC has home-on-jam guidance that negates the usefulness of the blackbird's ECM suites). If those missiles miss, then there will be absolutely no chance for the MiG-25 to catch the blackbird.

Oh yes, awesome drawing by the way!

Heh, didn't really expect such information from someone on the net (I mean that now you've more knowledge in thematics than most people on the Net). And you're right, standart version couldn't do such a speed for a long time. But there was one interesting vehicle...

Experimental MiG-25 for "Buran-Energiya" system tests. Maybe you heard about this program. This vehicle was created to test the spaceship's landing system. Even from the beginning MiG-25 and SR-71 were quite close, but this version was radical - all aluminium was replaced with titanium, all titanium - with nyobium. It had two seats (not to mistake with MiG-31 - it was a modification of MiG-25UB). Front seat - new navigation system, other was prepared for a pilot. He would land if system goes wrong, and he was programming it like "my own movements analog". It could reach more than 40 kilometers altitude, and more than 4 mach speed. To reach this speed, it had two rockets on its wings - they helped him to take-off and reach the altitude. The plane could throw them away only after they wear off. This plane also had forced engines, and lightened exterior. Of course, it was very expensive, and could fly only for an hour, but sure, it was a great piece of engineering. It had one tragic incident during the tests, but I'll tell about it sometime later...

What about standart MiG-25, it was designed not only for catching SR-71, but to catch strategy bombers. The main idea was to get OVER enemy's defences than fight them. That's why MiG-25 was created. It was quite close to SR-71 only by luck, to be honest, because noone expected such characteristics from this plane. Except of speed, of course. Sorry for a special MiG story, just came in mind.

I never know or read such variant of MiG-25 before, but no problem, glad to learn something new today.

Smart info, although i would not like to be the bird pilot in such a critical position

Mig-29,you made mistake.no one dare to challenge sr-71 in term of speed.

It's MiG-25 and obviously not MiG-29. MiG-29 does not have ventral fins and wing fences, also intake of MiG-29 located under the fuselage, not on side

Technically, the Mig-25 might have been able to catch the Blackbird but at that speed the Migs engines tended to explode

Even if MiG-25 can somehow outspeed SR-71, its service ceiling still far below SR-71's ceiling...

And also SR-71 can fly 5200m higher than MiG

Good luck; SR-71 still has about a third of the speed of sound on that thing, AND it's a Stealth Aircraft, so radar-guided missiles wouldn't be the best idea.

You're also forgetting that the MiG-25, while it can fly Mach 3, the actual top speed is Mach 2.8. The SR-71 can fly at Mach 3.2 for hours.

ZeroRM In reply to CarrieMoore [2012-08-26 20:40:54 +0000 UTC]

Exactly my point; the MiG would have a hard-time intercepting the Blackbird unless it somehow got really close, or above it to gain speed while diving.
