Description Actually not for Jurassic January - that comes later now that I scan things again. I drew this a couple months ago.

Distrito de Leiria, Portugal, 155MYA

An aguarato (Haldanodon exspectatus) rests on a log after a hunt, freezing still as a juvenile avodragao (Aviatyrannis jurassica) passes by in the forest.

Haldanodon was a member of Docodonta, a group of cynodonts that spawned all sorts of ecological niches. Haldanodon would have been the 15in long Jurassic equivalent of a desman, diving underwater in search of small invertebrates, fish, and amphibians. It likely would have had a keratinous shield on its head, covered by fur here.

Why the shield of keratin?

Not sure, perhaps to protect itself.
