Description

Anyone today who dare renounce the quest to reach His divine wisdom for whatever cost has surrendered thyself in the darkest of ignobilities. - Declaration in the Battle of Tabriz

Nairah, daughter of Maryam (149?-1523nae) was one of the few Exemplaries-and-Nobility under the rule of the Nafaritid Dynasty (modern Qavandeht), a title conferred to her after her death with her miraculous victory in the defense of the northern frontiers. Her victory was pivotal in the cementing of the Istanic faith to the interior of Entalaun and the end of Centaurine1 prescence in the subcontinent.

Intially an astrologist2-jurist under imperial patronage of Princes Akhmoshen and Nekhmeruf (later the Emperor Tavatrabat IX3), she came to the frontier city of Madzakva (modern Tabriz, Anrgen) to continue her research regarding omens surrounding the persistent raids of Centaurine nomads, who have been desecrating temples and abducting villagers for slaves in the northern regions.

Shortly after the beginning of her research in the city, Nairah noticed a triangular asterism, whose brightest star points directly to a mountain facing the city. Interpreting it as an imminent attack, she alarmed the Commander-Jurists present in the city about such impending danger. The warning, however, came too late. News came of a small expeditionary contingent of senior Commander-Jurists massacred by incoming forces of the Centaurine Erkentpuwar tribe.

Taking initiative despite lack of military experience, Nairah organized the remaining junior Commander-Jurists and prepared them for a last stand. As news of an incoming Erkentpuwaran army reaches the rump Jurist council, Nairah (out of initiative and apparent lack of effective leadership) was hastily acclaimed as effective senior Commander-Jurist of the city, giving her formal authority to lead the junior contingents and defend the city.

With the Centaurine hordes on sight, and with the desire to keep them from "touch[ing] our hallowed walls with their hooves", Nairah prompted to charge the horde in the field. Assembling an army of 900 footsoldiers and 200 cavalry against an army of 20,000. Guided by faith, Nairah's force charged straight into the mass. A lack of military experience (and foresight), Nairah's forces were immediately decimated to a third of its original size.

With defeat apparent, Nairah persisted, and in desperation meditated in the middle of battle. Soon after, witnesses claimed that she was "engulfed in a pillar of light from above", followed by a vortex of thaumic spirits. She was later seen hovering in the sky, bearing six white wings. Her sword was reportedly burning in a green and golden fire. Both forces stopped in awe at the sight, and some of the Centaurines joined the Istanim force in prostration. In one quick motion, most of the Centaurine force (who did not prostrate) were engulfed in a hail of fire.

The miracle ended after the last of the forces surrendered to the Istanic contingent, and Nairah's body was found dead, yet unscathed in the battlefield. Modern western and eastern historiographers agree that it was a thaumic event, and her death was from the overload of thavma in her body, rather than the impact of the fall. She was buried in the mausoleum of the observatory she worked in, and was posthumously awarded the title "Exemplary-and-Noble" by the Emperor Tavatrabbat.

Today, Nairah bint Maryam's story is used as a lesson to remain firm and unrelenting in faith as a practice of Nobility, and the need to act despite all odds.- Great Misericordian Encyclopedia, 2104 revision.

[1] While Thamne (from Etruscan word for "horse") is still used to refer to them for brevity (see world map ), the endonym Centaurine (kanta-stawran, "herders") is nowadays the preferred "politically correct" term in Hallegia and the Futurist International.
[2] Unlike in the Conditary World, astrology and astronomy are conflated and studied as one in modern Entalaun sciences.
[3] Short for Sarakhaw Peshidaw Tawatra'uwbbat--"The Sovereign Lord, The Tenth Living Solar Countenance of God."
[4] There is no one equivalent term for the Adian Zodiac thanks to Greek not existing. Greek's linguistic role in Adia is filled by Etruscan, Celtic and Egyptian.

...how have more people not found you yet? Do you put many tags on your work? This deserves, nay, requires more notes and favourites and whatnot. And it's over a year old, too!
