I have become an Escaflowne junkie. D:I watched the movie ages ago, but I watched the anime series and then watched the movie again. I love Van and Hitomi...; A ;! Gah! I cried in multiple scenes where they are together...OTL
Anyways, this is based on this one scene where little Hitomi sees Van amongst a crowd in the train station, one of my favorite scenes:[link]

It always looked like a girl to me. I always figured it was the wing goddess... huh... that's what I get for watching it back in elementary school huh? I still say he looks like girl though. Very nice artwork btw. With no lines either... very good.

Van? Really? But.. If I remember right there was young prince Folken, not Van.. Not, young prince Dune when he wasn't yet Lord Folken, leader of Black Dragon's clan. "You who shared my dreams" Lord Folken said to Hitomi. He said about their joint dreams, didn't he?.. Dreams they had together? And the dream - the scene on the train station - was the one of these old dreams, didn't it?..

I just assumed it was Van 'cause the guy at the station looked like him, but then again, he could look like the younger Folken.

Those guy was young Folken, undoubtedly. Young Hitomi had a vision of prince Dune (that's Folken's real name, remember?..). She sees him before the prophecy is spoken (that will deprive him of the right of throne), she sees him when he's gentle, kind and he has faith and hopefulness.
Then Hitomi and Folken's souls respond to each other through their mutual feelings, their bond is through their mutual deep depression and she sees the black-cloaked man, the astral projection of the adult Folken who beckons her to Gaea with a promise of oblivion. And their spiritual bond allows Folken to bring her to Gaia.
For you wouldn't have any doubt about this question, there's the legal citation from the movie's text annotation: "It is Folken Hitomi has a vision of when she is a child and it is Folken who calls her to Gaia."
So there's no need to do the research.

Yeah, I must confess I really love this anime, both the movie and the series (though the characters and the plots in this two anime are absolutely different; and I like them in different ways too). I was touched many years ago when I watched it and I still love it.
