Callie gave the rag tied around her arm one last, hard tug. “Good, nice and tight,” she said to herself. She sat back against the dirt-encrusted wall of the old boarded up building she had ducked into and picked up the hypodermic syringe that lay on the ground beside her thigh. Slowly, she rolled the left sleeve of her shirt up to her elbow, revealing a number of small scars, obviously caused by puncture wounds. Her thumb pressed carefully down on the plunger of the syringe, letting the air out of it until a single bead of clear liquid formed a drop on the end of the needle. She cautiously set the tip of the needle against her skin, wetting it with the droplet. Sighing gently, she pushed down, sliding the needle through her skin and into her vein. Pushing down on the plunger again, she slumped down against the wall as the fluid flowed into her body. She sighed again, heavily this time, closing her eyes and savoring the euphoric rush while it lasted. She knew it wouldn’t stay long, and she’d have to go seek her next fix. But for now she’d sit and enjoy the sensation of her sweet, sweet heroin.
