Great drawing. I think the dark shirt adds excellent contrast with his face. It adds a nice base. Besides, people will always be drawn to how well you captured his face. They will not care what the shirt looks like even though I think you did that well, also.

I'm glad you like it!

kasumisman [2009-06-24 17:12:11 +0000 UTC]

hmm i really like the way the skin came out but as for the shirt its just plain i think u should of added some light to it and show its texture where ever it would be or be original and add a design it would have been more appealing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Randy-man In reply to kasumisman [2009-06-24 19:12:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your opinion! I realize the simplicity of the shirt, but had it been "black" (as in the reference) or had too much detail, I think it would have thrown the composition out of balance, as the eyes would have been drawn to the lower half of the drawing, instead of the center.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kasumisman In reply to Randy-man [2009-06-24 21:15:10 +0000 UTC]

nah i don't think so at all i think u should put as much detail as u can in a portrait its kinda like the same with a real photo of course if the person is smiling people are gonna look at the face first then notice the shirt.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Randy-man In reply to kasumisman [2009-06-25 12:14:24 +0000 UTC]

I suppose. Maybe I was just lazy.
I still believe that, in the balance between detail and value, value is superior.

lol i know the feelingT_T

im always lazy when i do my portraits lol but i need someone to criticize me as well so i can get stuff done

Voohoo [2009-06-24 14:49:54 +0000 UTC]

whoah, spot on! i can see you making hyper-realistic portraits if you used darker/lighter pencils and not just 2B! it would be amazing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Randy-man In reply to Voohoo [2009-06-24 15:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is one of my only drawings that I only used one pencil.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Voohoo In reply to Randy-man [2009-06-24 17:01:59 +0000 UTC]

oh duh, i should've taken a look at your gallery. you're an awesome pencil artist. actually i recognize some pieces so i must've visited your page before. *added to DEVwatch!*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Randy-man In reply to Voohoo [2009-06-24 19:10:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The reason I wanted to use only one pencil is for a different "feel" and I think it adds more unity to the piece.
It's also somewhat of a challenge (for instance, it was very tempting to use a 5B in the shirt, since it would have been darker and taken less time to fill)

Voohoo In reply to Randy-man [2009-06-25 00:15:06 +0000 UTC]

ah yes, i see. it very well had an effect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Randy-man In reply to Voohoo [2009-06-25 12:15:18 +0000 UTC]

It is really soft, and has less "punch" than some of my other drawings, some of which have a lot more contrast.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Voohoo In reply to Randy-man [2009-06-25 16:25:03 +0000 UTC]

i have an eye for contrast. whenever i go to look at TVs, i always see if the black levels are good. if it's black then it has to look black!! that's why i'm excited for OLED TVs which will blow current LCDs out of the water. well, i'm not sure if i'm even making sense to you anymore; i'm kind of a geek. haha
