This version of Zelda has always struck me as an attempt to connect the character more deeply with nature with more earthy tones and practical attire.

Yes, a little bit. A lot of it has to do with that this is the "first" Zelda. While she does have some higher standing as her father is the headmaster of the Knight Academy, she isn't royalty; not a princess here.
I don't want to say too much since I don't remember if you said before that you've actually played the game or not - I don't want to spoil it. =3
