I KNOW it would've been so fun to see Barry stick around a little longer and grow as a character 8'( there isn't a whole lot of fanfic about him either but when I find some I'm so happy

I am glad to see that you are progressing in complexity and in shading to create contour and dimension.
You are doing well. The first step in learning a new aspect of drawing and painting, is to first actively notice it in other art, and study it, trying to understand its rules, how it works.
A good next step for you is to start thinking in terms of drawing and painting with light and shadow. For example, in this piece, all of your shading would be somewhat based on a light source (intensity, position, and angle). The tones (darkness/lightness) of your hues would vary not just for contour/shape/dimension, but also based on your light source(s).
For example, looking at the orange/red cloak in your piece, the tones would vary in intensity across the cloak at an angle. Your shading for contour would be a lighter shade at one end and a darker shad of shading at the other.
The more tones you use, and the smoother the tonal gradients, the higher the Tonal Quality of the piece.
For example, in this example [link] , the lightness, darkness, how that changes across a surface, and the angle of the change, are all based on light. Note also how everything is drawn in perfect 2 Point Interior Perspective. Can you see how every surface is expressed in terms of light and shadow?
Look at the role of light and shadow here [link] . Do you see the richness that it adds to the piece.
Look at the lace sleeve in this one [link]
Do you see how this one has been painted with light and shadow [link] ?
You might like this one too [link]
All the examples I gave you were done by the artist . All of his work is worth looking at.
Master artists understand and utilize the fundamentals of light/shadow and perspective, which is why their work is so stunning.
When you start to see artworks in terms of light, shadow, tones, and hues, it will literally change your vision of the world, or at least it did for me. It is like I had a new dimension added to my vision.
Human beings can actually choose to widen their vision, to choose to NOTICE the world around them in different ways.
Sometimes and artist can be intimidated by master art, like "I will never be able to do that." Instead of being intimidating, let it be INSPIRING.
---------------------------------
One way to practice is to use a strong light, like a desk light, and place a small simple and smooth object (like an apple) on the desk. Dim the overhead lights.
Take a piece of sting and hold it from the lamp along the top of the object and to the desk, in a straight line. See how the drop shadows work?
Next, notice how the light intensity (tones) across the surface of the object change according to the angle of the light source.
Move the lamp around and see how it changes.
Now draw it.
You can then add a second strong light source from a much different angle, see what the drop shadows look like. You can also step up to an object with a surface texture.
Then you can do an object with complex surfaces.
Have a friend model under a light so that you can see how the light plays across the face.
Then look at how light coming in your bedroom window changes every surface in the room.
I hope you do not mind me offering these ideas.
All the best,
Matthew

I know. It's a new series, yet it's...like...nostalgic. Not that I'm complaining if you draw more Barry.

KEEEEE. i wanna draw a chimera-form for him. depressing chimera. like poor little Nina. (who's death was way better in the old series even if it wasn't manga-accurate.)

Chimera Barry? Huh. Neat. And I'd have to agree with you on that.

poor Nina just couldn't win. ;-;
when i first read that part in the manga right after my stepsister introduced me to FMA like, 4 years ago, i was like " OH GOD. NOT NINA. NO."
