Okay, so I was asked by a friend to make this, so i hope it is useful to her and anyone else reading this. Heres a few other sources I use to help me manip;prints-of-hooves.deviantart.co… for shading to match sunsets, very useful!

basicly use the pipette/colour picker thing to select a dark color already existing in the mane (if you are using the same colour) and draw an outline like I have, basicly just a rough sketch of where you want the hair, then the rest goes on top of that base layer. Can't explain it any other way; just draw wavy triangles like I did? xD
