Actually I really like Tohma. I especially liked him when he stopped being as obsessive in the original ending. But Maki Murakami broke that character development in EX.

I kind of liked the obsessive tendency had about him. To me, it shows that he was traumatized almost as much as Eiri was in New York. I also kind of find it amusing... in volume 10, he tells Mika his priorities were skewed and that he would let Eiri live his life on his own more. Then that goes right out the window in EX, ffff.
Anyway, I like to think of it as a deep-rooted character flaw as opposed to character derailment. If it helps, EX is just one big bag of crack and random shippings. It's perfectly fine not to consider anything in it canon.
