The second Batgirl. She took over the role when No Man's Land occured, after Barbara Gordon had already spent a long time as Oracle. She's the daughter of Lady Shiva and David Cain, two of the League of Assassin's top agents. Shiva left her in Cain's care after she was born, going off to do a number of things (coming into conflict with Batman a number of times, becoming one of the top martial artists in the DC universe, and even becoming the adversary-guru of The Question), who raised her to be an assassin. She was initially mute, never taught by Cain to talk, but instead being taught to read people's body language. She ran away after her first kill though, because the experience of understanding the pain of death through watching the body language of it deeply disturbed her. She ended up wandering into Gotham and being taken in by Babs, who let her become Batgirl. Batman soon accepted her as well. She stayed in the role for a time, occasionally running into her mother, who became and advesary/guru combo to her in much the same way she had The Question. She retired after a final showdown with her mom (who was tired of being a killer and wanted to reinvent herself as something of an anti-heroine, but believed the only way she could be saved from herself was to first die, and goaded Cass into killing her, but Cass brough her back by hanging her over a Lazarus Pit, allowing her to be reborn-which makes sense as Shiva is the Hindu god of destruction, but whose destruction is the tool by which rebirth and new creation occurs-and join the Birds of Prey for a time. She retired after that, until she was drugged by Slade/Deathstroke and became a villain for a short time. Robin eventually saved her, allowing her to become Batgirl again, until she and Batman decided that it would be good for her best friend and Robin's former lover Stephanie Brown (aka Spoiler) take the costume and use it to wipe her slate clean and move past the mistakes she had made in the past as Spoiler and become the heroine she always had the potential and the dedication to be. She went to Hong Kong for a time after that to study, during which time Batman secretly inducted her into Batman Incorporated to be his East Asian agent, where she adopted the moniker of Black Bat.
