Say what you like about the dirty perv Hefner has been a consistent advocate for freedom of speech and expression and its good to know he views Marriage equality as part of that process. I also remember that Playboy was one of the earliest publishers to serialise Fahrenheit 451 (one of my favourite books) at a time when anti American paranoia was seeing it blacklisted by the mainstream publishers.

Surprised me a while back, too; he's actually done quite a bit that I think would surprise most people, from fighting for free speech (sponsoring a censorship class in a Cinematic Arts school), land conservation (especially around the Hollywood sign), and autism research (a bit misguided, but well-meaning), and fighting against animal cruelty. Marriage and gender equality seem to be his highest-profile endeavors, in recent years.
