Description
The storms bear down over vacant buildingswith no lights in the windows to go out;
and then, as if by magic, the vicious sun
splits the clouds with sharpened rays
that claw at the surface, searching for kindling
and fires spring up in the West, lit by moody Nature
and her heatstruck servants, so that
all may know by the smoke that the season is come
The gasp of bottles echoes in every home
as men raise toasts to modern gladiators
and the people wash away the year until they come to sleep
sprawled under the electrical palm leaf;
the children take to their distractions
with fast-burning vigour for a day, and plans are made
to send fortunes up in a shower of sparks
while strangers kiss all along the shoreline
Then come the days where every yard smells
of propane and charcoal, and ultraviolet traps
keep the vampires at bay long into the night
And soon the days will shorten and the clocks fall back
and we will sleep that promised hour
while the summer slips away to distant shores
and we can breathe again.
