Are the colored dots along the snakes spine intended to correspond with the chakras or am I imagining things?
The fine detail of the scales is ASTOUNDING!!

*nods* Yeah the coloured dots are meant to correspond with chakras and also the concept of the rainbow serpent - which I see all Australian snakes being connected to.

The rainbow serpent? I've not heard of the rainbow serpent before.

I have to agree with your family, this is a very beautiful drawing, wonderful colors and design...

I think the background colour looks a little... scrubbier than usual? Like your pink pencil is of a lower quality than the others. Aside from that it's great though, I like the pose of the snake. The downward angle makes it look very powerful (presumably because subconsciously we all assume it's being assissted by gravity).

This is a very beautiful drawing. I also like the dots and scales on the snake. His face is very realistic.
I do have a suggestion though. I believe the drawing would look better if flipped, with the snake pointing upwards. When something is pointed downward, it's more negative. If the snake faced up, this drawing would have positive direction.

Why is something more negative if pointed downwards?
I personally see it as symbolic of choosing to go beneath the surface, and taipan, being one the most venomous land snakes in the world; and connected to Chthonic earth mysteries, would have a more challenging energy than an uplifting one I think.

Ah, I don't really think of myself as a designer, I think of myself as a spiritualist / pagan (I'd be a crap designer! Which is ironic, my stepdad works in graphic design, lol). But in my spiritality, inversion can be positive. I think even in Wicca, during second initiation training, the initiate wears an inverted pentagram to symbolise the descent to the underworld and understanding of mysteries like death and rebirth.
I suppose in the mainstream, those sorts of symbols would be considered quite negative.

I wonder why it is that the pieces the maker loves are so often overlooked, and the ones they dislike become so popular. Strange, neh? ;3
This is really lovely though! Those scales are wonderful and the colors are just great!
