It stands for "All-Terrain MegaCaliber Six" which is a reference to the large cannon mounted on it's back. At least that is what Wookieepedia says. That's a good question about the front feet/hands. I think you may be onto something there. Given the very different design, perhaps the hands do have significantly different functionality. Interesting!

Form generally fits function. If all four feet were the same it wouldn't have stood out quite so much as a functional difference.

I can't argue with that description. Apparently this design was inspired by big silverback gorillas. It definitely gives this vehicle a whole different feel, while still delivering all of the yummy lumbering goodness of the original Imperial Walkers.

Yeah but it still looks weird to me. It's like a mechanized 'brute'. King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, Optimus Primal even. Seeing this I am waiting for Godzilla to appear and fight the thing!
