Description I was trying to explain something to someone the other day about why I like to draw people crying.

I forget most of my own explanation, which sucks... because I wish I could think about it some more. There are a lot of reasons I enjoy it. Maybe I'm just a sicko!

I wish I could remember what i said... so I could quote this right, but at some point, I was saying something about people being HIDEOUS when they're crying--that the audience (or spectator I guess) shouldn't be 'comfortable' when they watch it. I know, even though I've cried a lot in public, that it doesn't always envoke -empathy- in me when I watch other people cry.

Sometimes it makes me -sick- or -angry- or even -irritated-.

I guess its all circumstancial. Either way, its an interesting thing to try capturing in a drawing. Its an utterly natural process--everyone does it differently. And -because- you're ugly when you're doing it, a DRAWING of it can look a thousand different ways and still be 'true'.

I -think- that's my answer anyway. Its not something I've given a lot of thought to in terms of 'why'.

This particular drawing is just one of those super-fast scribbles... Born out of just my wanting to draw something 'lucid'. Couldn't have taken more than a minute... and I hate myself for being ABLE to draw that fast sometimes because I kick myself later when I'm taking forever on a different drawing and remembering ones like THIS that were done before I even knew it.

If a character remains charming during tears, and not one viewer gets chills, I call bull. Crocodile tears.
This is perfect.

You know, I was going to mention this before, but... I always found your EEnE drawings to be a bit leaky.

Eh, at least you're not doing the sexy cry that movies do... I hate those. usually because they don't list the reasons why you like to draw people crying, actually.

I don't know who coined that term, but the first time I heard it was recently in an episode of The Nostalgia Critic. I found it very apt. There's nothing genuine about it.. Its that kind of fake emoting that people toss in because I guess they feel its obligatory to tug at the audience's heart strings but they don't understand how. I don't know. I've probably spent way too much time thinking about why it occurs and how much it pisses me off.

I realize my drawings may be too 'leaky' for some. Doing stuff like that is just a way to explore both myself and the characters I'm drawing. If figuring out the way a character smiles is important, then figuring out how they are when they're upset is important too.. though I think a lot of my drawings like this are a direct reaction to this 'sexy cry' we're discussing. From a character/acting standpoint it always just made me mad that so many characters emoted the exact same way. Its like shorthand for actual sadness: "Please insert your own emotions here."

That being said, there are really good examples out there even if they're not that frequent. "Bumby's Mom" with Slappy and Skippy on Animaniacs (though it was played mostly for laughs) was ironically a really genuine example. One of my all time favorite crying scenes is actually from an episode of The Simpsons, called Like Father, Like Clown. After Krusty shows a very special 'father/son' episode of Itchy and Scratchy he veeeerry slowly breaks down as he's trying to speak. Its that struggle with composure that really sells the performance.

He said it explicitly, though TV Tropes has the same thing with a different name (Glad you like - or at least watch - him too!)

But it's not like your drawing such pictures a lot is a bad thing. I shouldn't tell you what to draw, even if it was too teary for me. I'm not renowned or talented enough to be a proper art critic, nor am I mean spirited enough to be a troll - your art some of the most emotive and thought provoking I've seen on Deviant Art while it is based off an American cartoon I used to watch with my Dad.

Actually, I remember some Twilight Movie meme that had a drawing of Bella Swan's open mouthed blank-stare, and it didn't move between any emotions except for 'sick' where she had a green hue, and 'in love' where she had little hearts around her apathetic face. There are similar pictures, but that stuck out if only because I don't like Twilight... I myself am definitely more of a writer, and see myself constantly walking a line between levels of description. It's one thing to note the physical differences of a character crying, kissing someone, being angry, ect. But unless you get into their heads and create a personal, unique and individual experience of what they feel, it falls flat... I hate reading most romantic scenes for this reason; I know what happens when two people kiss, it gets so repetitive and cliched, most of the terms used, that I end up skipping parts put into a story that are supposed to make it sell better or whatever.

I also hate it where something gruesome or serious isn't written or portrayed as such so viewers don't get 'disgusted' I'm not trying to make someone throw up, or trying to make it so hardcore that the whole thing becomes desensitized - I just want an emotionally charged scene that the reader can derive sympathy from, even if it makes some uncomfortable because fictionally people can't have real people problems and such ignorant reasoning.

...Getting back on track, those are both good examples. I know that when I see people start to cry, and try to struggle through it, it makes it harder for me to not cry, as well. The ending to the musical Wicked was one, where The Good Witch of the North breaks down crying while everyone else is celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West... names averted since there aren't any spoiler tags on DA

I like to draw crying as well, especially Double Dee. Something about his face when he's struck with grief makes him all the more lovable and fun to draw. I guess it's because like many EEnE fans, I relate to his emotional struggles and sympathies with him the most when he's sad.

This looks like it's out of the series finale, Fist Full of Ed, when Ed backs Edd away with a lunchroom chair.

Well, let us figure out this lovely emotive picture eh?

A-aaaaaaa-a-aaaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaalrighty then.

So, he's wearing his tie, which means he's at school. Or going to or coming from. He's crying pretty hard so something really BAD mustuve' happened to 'im. Since he's crying so openly, he's either alone or trying to make an impression.
If he's trying to make an impression, it's not a good one, so the first one is more likely.

Ookeedookie! There we go! What have we learned? Absolutely nothing! Yay! Glad we got that over with!

Very true. There have been times when I've watched a movie where the character is sobbing, and I just can't wait for the scene to end because it feels so awkward to watch.

I want to fave this for the description (not that the picture isn't good )

I see what you mean though, it's always good for an artist to draw what they don't neccessarily like- it takes alot of discipline to do that.
I've been trying to draw what I find hideous and frightening the several months, and it's been very effective- it's even cured some phobias

nice one

Intesity is what drives the human soul.

After all, Verneer, Picasso, and many other painters focus on the emotions at their height.
Artistically, it draws the viewer in.

You've just succumbed to the human urge to see such.
Congrats.

Lovely picture, by the way. He looks as if he's had enough.

Your comments are this are so...damn. Brings the pic to a whole new level - not just a picture meant to make you feel something. The emotion of the picture and the cerebral quality of your description...it's like some weird catharsis.
Thanks.

Thank -you-. Its sort of hard to talk about what I draw and why, cuz its all just loose thought and when I try to write it down its usually fragmented and doesn't make sense. I mean, there's a reason I -draw- and don't write, right? But I'm ecstatic you can take something away from it either way. Makes me feel.. useful.

So again, thanks...

Woah... Thats one of those bursts of tears that happen when its a mixture of anger and tragedy. Man i get that a lot. I dnt really cry and "sad" things, but i mostly cry when i'm Angry. Say i've been in a fight, i'll crt afterwards from all the emotions come to one. It just comes out in tears, and usually happens when your talking and you feel the emotion literally bubbling up in your chest and all of a sudden it's "i want SOME CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ESEBOOHOOO!"
