Background story:

  Hotoko was raised in a very large house. His father, Haji, was a very high ranked officer and had to live in a residence that had all important members and very important visitors staying there. Hotoko and his mother, Ruka, moved in so they can be closer to Haji and keep him company. Hotoko was very interested in the new home they live in and went exploring a lot of the time since there was no kids in the house except him. He did find someone to talk to, Irezumi (meaning tattoo), but only could see her at night since that was the time she was scheduled to do night shift. Irezumi was always wearing a mask and Hotoko never knew what her face looked like. As Hotoko grew a little older, he began to call Irezumi his sister. To him, she was like family and he found it easy to talk to her. Everything seemed right until one night, the house was under attack by raiders. They took everything valuable and set the house on fire, Hotoko was with Irezumi when this happened. Irezumi was protecting Hotoko from the flames and escorted him out. Unfortunately, Irezumi and Hotoko were caught in a battle with the raiders. Hotoko hid behind a door and watched Irezumi fight, he felt terrified and helpless that he could not help her to fight. Irezumi was gravely wounded after she had defeated the last raider. Hotoko tried to help her get up but it was no use, she told him to get out. Hotoko, being stubborn, refused to leave. Irezumi took off her mask, showing him her face for the first time. Hotoko finally understood why everyone called her “tattoo”, she had a tattoo going down her left eye. She gave him her mask and told him to keep it and think of it as a final parting gift from her. She then died from her wounds. Hotoko was saved by another guard and taken to safety and reunited with his family.

  As the years passed after the incident, Hotoko was now 17. He began to keep away from people and was always on his own. He tattooed the same tattoo as Irezumi had, right onto his left eye just like her. He also wore the mask that Irezumi gave to him. He promised to himself and Irezumi that he will never take off the mask. At the age of 19, he left his village to go explore other places. He did not stay in places for long, he was always on the move, and he never really made friends or bothered to talk to people. As Hotoko visited many villages, he learned new tricks and jutsus by reading scrolls and practising on his own, with sometimes the help of a sensei that was willing to teach him techniques. Most people saw him as not threat, but rather a young man that was willing to learn and absorber all the knowledge he could.

  When Hotoko was around the age of 24, he stumbled upon the Kiri village. Like always, Hotoko stopped by and rested at the village for a while, gathering his knowledge from scrolls. As he was in the library, looking through some scrolls, he meet a young girl that was watching him. Hotoko didn't pay much attention to her, because it was obvious that she wanted to be noticed by him. He ignored her, not wanting the little girl to come talk to him. As the days went by, Hotoko seemed to notice that the girl was to be seen looking at him and observing him in the library everyday. Hotoko asked the librarians about the girl. They told him that her name was Yuki, a 14 year old girl that lived in the orphanage. She spent most of her time in the library reading books anything to occupy her time just to get away from the orphanage. As the days continued, Hotoko finally started a small conversation with the girl. She didn't speak much, but that worked to Hotokos liking. Even if Hotoko and Yuki did not talk much, they seem to get along just fine.

  When it was time for Hotoko to leave the village, he was followed by Yuki. Hotoko knew that she was following him, so he wanted to test her on how far would she go just to follow him. Hotoko made sure that he walked to places that were hard to walk on, or dangerous. He did not stop to rest for a night or stop for food. To his surprise, Yuki was still following him, tired and hungry, but still following him. Hotoko offered her water and food and also offered her to be his companion in his journeys. He would teach her his ways and techniques in fighting. Hotoko taught her everything that he knew and whatever he learned from scrolls. In Yukis eyes, Hotoko was her role model and her only family, so like a family of clan, she wanted to have a mask like his. She too started to wear a mask, keeping it on and not showing her face to anyone.

  But their strong relationship went sour. Yuki wanted to use her fighting skills in combat, as for Hotoko, he wanted to stay away from fighting as much as possible, and only fight if necessary. The argument between them split them up and both went their separate ways. Hotoko continued his journey alone. For a long time he was alone until at the age of 30. He was reunited with Yuki when he stopped by the Kumo village. Though she was no longer the small little sweet girl he once knew. She was now a strong, independent woman, but Hotoko could feel that she still hungered for fights. But Hotoko pushed the feeling away since he was just happy to be with Yuki again. Just like old times, Yuki and Hotoko travelled together once again. But once again, it was not meant to last. This time, Yuki was given instructions to kill Hotoko since she was a hired ninja assassin. During her years away from Hotoko, she needed a job, and was hired by a woman called Kari (meaning hunt). Hotoko meat with her long ago. A valiant woman that didn't get along with Hotoko back then. There was more to Hotoko then Yuki ever knew, and Kari told Yuki everything about him. Hotoko was once in the same group as Kari. The group was supposed to be a group that killed bad or wanted ninjas. That was at least what Hotoko thought, but soon found out that he was killing innocent ninjas that were not convicted of anything. The group just wanted to eliminate anyone that was powerful. Hotoko left the group but was followed by Kari, leading him to defend himself and kill Kari. He thought that he killed her, but she survived. Now wanting him gone, he sent Yuki after him.

  Hotoko could not bear the thought of killing Yuki. So he managed to knock her out and leave her, escaping without any harm come to her. Hotoko made his way back to the place where he knew Kari was. This time he was going to finish the job on killing her. She was dangerous and needed to be gone so no one would get hurt anymore by her. He meet face to face with her in her little secret place where the old groups headquarters where. A battle between them broke out and ended up wounding Hotoko badly, but despite his wounds, he managed to kill Kari, this time, there was no way she was coming back. Hotoko managed to heal his wounds, and then disappeared without a trace. Yuki and Hotoko never meet after that, but he knew that one day he will meet her again. Next time they see each other, they will not be on good terms with one another.
