Thanks! Yeah, I know...I really struggled with getting the hair lit from behind in postwork. I didn't even think about the black on black until after it was rendered. And since the hair took forever, I really didn't feel up to re-doing it a lighter color. I may go back and try to add a bit more color to the background behind her head, so the hair will show up a little more.

how long does it normally take to render your pictures?

On average...about 6-10 hours or so. I can't remember how long she took, but the hair is what generally takes the longest because of the transparencies hair has. I could just render the head (with hair) and merge the image together in postwork, but that's still another 2-3 hours at least...and I just wanted to get the image done.

didn't think it would be that long. 2-3, ok. but 6-10, that's... well... a long time!
I would die just waiting for it to get finished.
so you better make sure to get all the details before rendering, right?

LOL...yeah, to get all the realistic shadowing and textures, it can take a good while rendering. I've had one or two images take up to 17+ hours before. It does become a pain waiting for it to get done...but the finished image is always worth the wait.
And yes, I get everything worked out before that final render...which entails a lot of test renders to make sure everything's right. But even still, sometimes one little thing can be missed (in this case, that the hair blended too much into the background) and then I have to decide if it's worth it to wait while I re-render that part or not. In this case, I decided to try to fix the background instead of the character. Still need to go in a touch that up some, brightening it, but I haven't had time.
