Description The Heinkel He 162 VolksjΓ€ger "People's Fighter" was a German single-engine, jet-powered fighter aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe in World War II. Armed with two 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons, with 120 rpg. Designed and built quickly, and made primarily of wood as metals were in very short supply and prioritised for other aircraft, the He 162 was nevertheless the fastest of the first generation of Axis and Allied jets.

The He 162 finally saw combat in mid-April. On 19 April, a captured Royal Air Force fighter pilot informed his German interrogators that he had been shot down by a jet fighter matching the description of the He 162. The Heinkel and its pilot were lost as well, shot down by an RAF Hawker Tempest while on approach. Though still in training, I./JG 1 had scored a number of kills beginning in mid-April, but had also lost 13 He 162s and 10 pilots. 10 of the aircraft were operational losses, caused by flameouts and sporadic structural failures. Only two of the 13 aircraft were actually shot down. The He 162's 30-minute fuel capacity also caused problems, as at least two of JG 1's pilots were killed attempting emergency landings after exhausting their fuel.

By the time of the German unconditional surrender on 8 May 1945, 120 He 162s had been delivered; a further 200 had been completed and were awaiting collection or flight-testing; and about 600 more were in various stages of production.

Would love to see a flyable replica built of this aircraft, though I have read only experienced pilots should have been entrusted with it, not the teenage glider-trained pilots it was intended for!

Looks like the A-10's ancestor, minus the excessive firepower.

So, is this a model or an actual aircraft.Β  If it's an actual aircraft where is it based.Β  (I know it can't be Germany because the German government has banned the display of the swastika.

It was captured in May 1945 at Leck when the airfield was overrun - there's a pdf on the RAF Museum's site here: [link]

Hendon is a great museum by the way...

Only 30 minutes of fuel?!?! Dang. I love this plane, but I never knew that about it. XDDD

I don't know if this would even have worked, but I think it would have been cool to see what this plane would have been capable of if they had used a proper construction for it, instead of that crappy wooden construction.

Nice photo, by the way!

I know, suck don't it. Fuel was the major problem for all Germany's jet aircraft. The supply being destroyed b4 reaching the air bases.

Well, it sucks that such a cool plane never really got a chance to prove itself due to a fuel shortage...then again, if they had enough fuel and were able to use the plane to its full capabilities, that would have been really, really bad. (You know, because Nazis + Awesome jets = Nazis being really hard to beat. ) If only the Allies had come up with this instead of the Nazis, then the plane would have gotten the praise it deserved.

Nice study of the RAF Museum example. I'd kind of argue the top speed quote- my guess is depending on altitude and the build quality of the individual aircraft, the 262 and P-80A would be similar. Build quality of the late war german jets was pretty spotty at best, using a lot of forced labor.
