“Don't worry, darling,” Amberette purred in her ear. “Accidents happen.” Her words were a cold taunt, delivered with nonchalance only she could master.

Athena turned around, her gaze intense and fiery. “You?” she yelled in disbelief, rage consuming her. “How?!”

“Such a dramatic accusation, Miss Corleone,” Amberette began, a mischievous smile spreading across her face. “Do you really think I would be caught dead in such a gaudy display?”

Athena leaned in to whisper to the guards on how to deal with the thieves. Before she could say anything, sudden screams erupted from another room where a small fire had broken out. The guards quickly left to deal with the fire before it spread out of control. Amberette took the opportunity to step back, realizing it was time for her to disappear amidst the growing chaos.

“If I were you, I’d invest in better security detail. Or perhaps,” she paused, her smile disappearing and her eyes twinkling with a dangerous spark, “you could just stick to galas you can actually afford. Perhaps, then, you won’t need to resort to murdering your allies for financial gain.”

With that parting shot, Amberette briefly stopped and looked back. Her hand lowered into a hidden compartment near the slit of her dress, reappearing with a glint of cold steel. The pistol she held was a punctuation mark to her words, a reminder of the consequences of underestimating her. A smile reemerged, this time hinting at something more sinister. And maybe, if Athena is unlucky enough, she may find out why they call her Mamba.

“Was the fire necessary?” Amberette asked, already knowing the answer.

“Always. She deserved to be taken down a peg,” Raye replied.

Amberette scoffed as they made their escape, leaving the gala behind.
